Whether we have the name Baptist or not, this should be the real issue: Are Christ and His Word being faithful presented?

But shouldn't we be proud to be called Baptists?

I'd be more ashamed that people knew what my church was according to the sign as opposed to who we represent in the community.

Good point, webdog, But if as Baptists wer are charged with deception by others because we don't where the name "Baptist" in our church sign, Shouldn't that be a matter of concern?

Assuming you have children, so you go to your son's baseball game and he hits a ball over the fence and runs all the way home with joy, Wouldn't you be proud of him?

The world (and legalists) will complain no matter what name is on a church, IMO.

I may be wrong...but I think Alcott was speaking of self pride.

If it's self-pride, then I agree with him.

I agree. But here's the grind:

The sign on your church is: Shiloh Hills Community Church. A person becomes a new converted member (not a transfer), but only to find out that you are Baptist all along.

What if he feels deceived? Would his feelings be legitimate? Wouldn't it be a cause for concern?

That's an incorrect assumption, as I have no kids. And is there a biblical exception for such a case?

It is the churches responsibility to inform any new members who they are associated with from the start. I would also hope that any potential member would do their homework in the first place.

    Alcott, it's an assumption.

Maybe you can help me understand where you're coming here: But what do people mean by "I proud of my kids" or I'm proud of my spouse in getting a promotion" and so on?

but inaccurate. John was not a "Christian" any more than were Moses, David, , Abraham, Abel, and that Biblical 'saint of saints', Hizzoner, the Mayor of Sodom, Lot. Yes, all were 'saved' saints (like there really is another kind), but none of them were 'Christians'.

However, you are correct about John getting a new last name.

Or was that a new denomination?

Oh yeah! One more thing for the readers of the thread.

You don't like me calling Lot the Biblical 'saint of saints'?? Don't blame me. Take it up with the Holy Spirit. He is the one who caused the writers of Scripture to specifically identify only Lot and Abel as 'righteous' or 'just' three times each, and specifically identify Lot, and him alone, out of all the persons named in Scripture, as one of "the godly".

A reason to have the name Baptist in the church name is for folks like me. Many a time in a year I find out where I'm going late at night and will be passing a town on Sunday morning, I try and find a Baptist Church where I can park or park near, so I can go to the service. Most of the time I have a short amount of time to find a church because I can't lose more than about an hour and a half from pulling off the road to getting back on the road.
I have learned that all Baptist churches aren't what I would call a Baptist church or of the type I'm use to and I've learned very few that I've been to who don't have baptist in there name are what I'm use to. Some town are better than others, what I mean, Jacksonville, Fl. I have been to a few and they all have been great as far as the doctrine which I believe in, and in parts of North Carolina and Virginia I've had a little harder time of finding churches with the same or near doctrine which I'm use to, but have found over time many good ones in my eyes up there too. If I knew the night before where I was going it would never be a problem.
So you can see the name gives me a place to start.

You raised an important issue: looking for a Baptist church when you're out of town or something like that. I understand that.

As for me, I'll look for the nearest church, whether Baptist or not.

Then you might walk in and find it's a liberal entity.

As you pointed out, not even a church with the name Baptist might be the one you're looking for.

    So the search continues.
