We have all we need in the Holy Bible.

So you read nothing other than the Bible? What about what you listen to? Only scripture there? Paul quoted paganism in order to reach people. He teaches about becoming all things to all people so that some might be saved.

I do read other material from time to time, but I do not compare it with the Bible.

These were more noble than those in Thessalonica, in that they received the word with all readiness of mind, and searched the scriptures daily, whether those things were so. (Acts 17:11)

We are to search the Scriptures daily--we are to check out EVERYTHING we hear, see and read with the Word of God. If what we hear, see and read does not line up with the Word of God, we are to judge and put away and separate from those false teachers and false teachings. We need to use discernment. Physical health is maintained by separation from disease germs. Spiritual health is maintained by separation from germs of false doctrine.

There are too many "wolves" in "sheep's" clothing fleecing the sheep. Instead of looking for God in an allegory, such as Narnia, search the Scriptures daily as the Bereans did (Acts 17:11).

I think this quote perfectly summarizes your thological errors. You take a hard stance on theology that is not biblical from other legalists and do not compare it with the Bible, but take the same Scripture out of context to sustain your argument.

Ignorance is wide spread. It is systematic and has a purpose. The fewer people with definite stands the less opposition to a false, one world unity. In many places ignorant Catholics, ignorant Anglicans and ignorant Baptists all fellowship.

People desire pleasure and humanism more than truth and the situations listed are evidence. We do live in times where there is an explosion of knowledge, Daniel prophesied this, but there many are destitute of wisdom.

A "liberal arts" education I believe is profitable so long as the emphasis and authority always rests on the Word of God.

We want tp try to introduce a new hymn every couple of weeks. It increases the congregations singing ability and broadens our experiance and knowledge of worshipping God.

In my experience the opposite is true. It is those who are strongly aware of the beliefs of their own traditions and those of other groups that fellowship with other Christian groups. I believe it tends to be those who are ignorant of their own beliefs and those of other groups that choose to remain separate and unchallenged in their ignorance.

Jesus said that He did not come to send peace but the sword. He spoke of His truth dividing families.

If A believes salvation is by grace and B believes salvation is by works how can enable unity?

If A believes when we get to Heaven we become gods and B believes when we get to Heaven we become perfected and worship God for eternity how can they have unity?

Now, between some Christian groups a better knowledge may encourage fellowship, but certainly not with different religious beliefs.

My point was that a dumbing down of truth enables anyone to fellowship. For a Muslim and a Christian to fellowship there must be the sacrifice and comprimise of truth.

I believe Jesus said this in reference to sword and division between families and friends where some become Christians and others remain Jewish or whatever it is they were before.

However among Christians, Jesus prayed for unity in

While Paul implore unity among Christians in the early church.

I hope to live obedient to these scriptures, prayers and teachings.

I am not so sure that the verses I originally referred to where simply Jewish/Christian issue only. However, I am open to that one.

I absolutely believe we need unity. However, that can only happen in many places if truth is sacrificed.

Too much emphasis can be put on separation and then you get isolated, but then sometimes too much is on unity and then you the World Council of Churches.

Ignorance is bliss, for a while.

My church is a member of the Baptist Convention of Ontario and Quebec which is a member of the Canadian Council of Churches which is a member of the World Council of Churches.

I have no problem with that and appreciate the willingness of my convention to dialogue and agree or disagree with many of the other member groups and traditions in Christendom.

The first lessons that we teach our children are what is acceptable and what is not. What is good and what is bad. What is good and what is evil.

There are many children's books that teach these concepts to children. How can this be wrong? Many children who never attend church will read these books. These books may be the first opportunity that they have to learn about Jesus.

And a movie is even better.

This is a little off the subject, but some of the church members who are not aware of C. S. Lewis or certain works of his may be of a generation that was not exposed to his writings as a child.

I agree, Tater. The Lion, The Witch, and the Wardrobe is a beautiful story and I'm going to be sure that my grandchildren read it.

My 18 year old grandson has seen the movie three times. He has been a Christian for many years and plans on special service to His Lord.

May we all study and learn as much as we can about our Lord and Savior.

[IMG] I wondered if mentioning the WCC would step on some toes. Anyway, I don't want to detract any more from this post.

Thankful, I enjoyed your post. I think using different mediums to convey the message is effective. It is using what people are familiar with. Paul referred to poets ect...

I know that most baptists on this forum are opposed to ecunmenicalism and organizations like the NCC and WCC. That doesn't bother me, but yes, I agree we've digressed enough. [IMG]

TaterTot, I don't think I'd be all that troubled by folks not knowing Narnia, Lewis or hymns they haven't heard. I think we have too much ignorance of the Word of God to worry about first.

I'm wondering also if maybe you didn't pick the wrong word. Is it perhaps an "attitude" that is troubling you? That is, perhaps that they don't want to know anything different than what they already know?

I am a little troubled about you all and your pianist. What are you are praying for? That she retire? That she learn round notes? Something else?

Shaped notes are a boon for sight reading for singers. The problem in your case, especially for a pianist, is that songs in shaped notes are not as readily available nowadays. Maybe that will change someday. I'm hopeful because of shaped note advocates such as David Music at Baylor, Russell Riepe at Texas University, Warren Steel at the University of Mississippi and so on in major universities. But it will probably be a long time before their work shows up in students changing the world of music, and it may never have a strong effect on denominational publishing houses.

In the meantime (and before your pianist retires), have you all tried any creative solutions? I would think that many of the songs that are in the Baptist Hymnal would be available somewhere in shaped notes. Perhaps copies could be made. Does anyone in the church or near you have a music publishing program on their computer - like Melody Assistant, Sibelius or Finale? It would take some work. But if there are some new songs that you want to do and they aren't available in shaped notes, they could be printed up with such programs. Of course, you may run into copyright issues on newer songs. I'm not sure how far the fair use idea goes on something like this. Some people can be hired to do this set up at a nominal charge. These are just a couple of thoughts that might help alleviate the situation. Perhaps others can suggest other ideas.

Oh, dear! I really, really dislike shaped notes and thought they were a thing of the past. :D

I have never understood their purpose. Why can't a person read a round note as well a shaped note?

Thankful, they do have a purpose. The purpose is really for the singer, not the instrumentalist -- although I know a few pianists who have taught themselves to play using shaped notes. But I would hasten to ask, "Why can't a person read a shaped note as well a round note?"

Rather than try to write a lengthy explanation here, I'll post a few links that you can read if you'd like.

What are the Shapes and Why? (short)

    Do Shaped Notes "work"?

    Shape note - Wikipedia encyclopedia

Dr. David Warren Steel and Steven Sabol have 16 chapters of Shape note music resources for anyone who wants to go more in depth.

    Hope this helps.

No, she is very feeble and cannot continue. We are at a crossroads in our church, as many people are wanting some freshness in our worship style, and others dont want to budge a bit. I have Finale and have converted many a round note song to shaped notes, but if its not Southern Gospel, it dont get played! [IMG] We have the 1975 Baptist Hymnal, and we have one copy of that in shaped notes. Cant get another, contacted publisher.
I may have caused you to misunderstand - we are only praying that now as we are at a crossroads, that we will be relevant and obedient.

Thanks, TaterTot, for clearing that up. I was unsure what you were praying for.
