From KJV Prophecy Marked Reerence Study Bible published by Zondervan
From KJV Scofield Study Bible published by Oxford University Press
You will notice the difference in the spelling of throughly vs. thoroughly in the above verse. To me the difference is simply in the spelling of the word and does not change the meaning at all. However my wife read in a book (titled "Things That are Different are not the Same", I don't know author) that the spelling subtly changes the meaning putting more emphsis on man than God. Does anyone have any input on this "change" to the KJV?

When I lookup the definition of throughly in the American Heritage Dictionary it simply refers me to the entry for thoroughly.

Not sure if the really belongs in the versions fourm or the theology fourm, but since Dr. Cassidy moderates here Im putting it in versions as I think he will have a good explaination.

I imagine the good doctor will appeal to the OED that the two words mean the same. And I believe he will be right. There does not seem to be any real difference in the English meaning. The book you are referring to sounds like a book that builds a lot of straw men based on nonsense and then defends a position with it. It is common albeit unfortunate.

It is possible that it is just a misprint.

Throughly is an archaic spelling of thoroughly. The OED simply refers the reader to the newer spelling. The idea that the words mean different things is ludicrous and completely unsupported by any etymology or philology on record.

Thanks Dr. Cassidy and Pastor Larry.

Im glad to know I was correct in my thoughts. Unfortunatly my wife will often believe something just because its in a book, or because someone she respects said it, and not check it out herself. She just dosn't understand why I refuse to take things at face value when they don't sound right to me.
