Fortunately, a number of congressmen requested that the General Accountability Office (GAO) investigate and report information on criminal aliens incarcerated in federal and state prisons and local jails. The resulting GAO report, published in April 2005, revealed that illegal aliens make up 27% of the prison population. (The oft-cited figure of 12 million illegal aliens in the country means that they make up just 4% of the general population.)

Since illegal aliens are unlikely to be committing white-collar crimes, that figure likely underestimates the amount of violent crime committed by illegal aliens. Using the GAO report, Representative Steve King of Iowa points out that 25 Americans, on average, are killed by illegal aliens every day (about evenly split between motor vehicle accidents and outright murder).

Do the math: That works out to more than 9,000 deaths per year, or more than 36,000 deaths over the past four years. That's more than ten times the number of Americans killed in Iraq over the past four years!

GAO Report

How many incarcerated: Criminal aliens incarcerated increased from about 42,000 at year-end 2001 to about 49,000 at year-end 2004.

Country of citizenship: For 2004, the majority of incarcerated criminal aliens were identified as citizens of Mexico.

Costs of incarceration: We estimate the federal cost of incarcerating criminal aliens totaled about $5.8 billion from 2001 through 2004: direct federal costs ($4.2 billion) and federal reimbursements to state and local governments ($1.6 billion).

At the state level, the 50 states received reimbursement for incarcerating about 77,000 criminal aliens in fiscal year 2002 and 47 states received reimbursement for incarcerating about 74,000 in fiscal year 2003.

Assuming that illegal aliens are not committing white collar crimes is probably correct; however, to assume then that illegal aliens are mainly involved in violent crimes is a logical digression. In fact, in 2005, murder comprised of ONLY 1.2% of the overall estimated number of violent crimes in the US. Where is the evidence that 9,000 of the 16,692 deaths were attributed to illegal aliens? Until Rep. King gives any type of statistical proof to his claims I will have to chalk his "findings" up to another scare tactic used to rile the American people.

I'd need to see some statistical validation. This smells like the once oft-quoted number of homeless who die every day. If you run the math on that one, we have a few million homeless dying every year. The numbers just don't make sense, and the author admitted to fabricating them.

I digress......
