A hearty "Amen" from predominantly Catholic S. Texas!

Southern Baptist Pastors Randy Williams (Hill Memorial Baptist, Ferriday, LA) and Chris Bonts (Parkway Baptist, Auburn, AL) advocate observance of Lent.

Jerome - there is no need to post those Baptists who celebrate lent - or those churches that do so too. It doesn't matter. It's not Biblical so it's not something that we are commanded to do and it's OK for churches to decide to not follow the traditions of others. Seeing that another church does it doesn't make it "right" or "proper" in my mind. I'm not saying it's wrong for everyone but in my culture here on Long Island, I do think it would be wrong for a Bible teaching church (Baptist or otherwise) to focus on the practices of the local Catholic churches and follow suit. It would be very confusing to new converts.

It seems our post modern reformed brethren are more turning toward Catholic practices. Lent and contemplative prayer seem to be recent common practices. Doesn't lend much credibility to it.

    Amen!

Amen also from predominantly Catholic New Hampshire.

Lent is just another Catholic tradition based on works....the need to give something up, sacrifice something. ...still trying to make up for personal sins. The Sacrifice of Christ on the Cross is completely sufficient for both justification and sanctification of the believer. No need for anything else.

That's the beauty of being a Baptist!!!

We are like a chinese buffet.. many different flavors to choose from.. and one church should not dictate to another what to do...

And if I were in your shoes, I may even abstain from celebrating it myself..
But for our church.. it was and is a deeper way to connect with God.

And Tim - We might do what you did - at another time not connected with Lent. I know we've done very similar things with the youth group in the past and it's really effective. :)

    :wavey:

I'm tired - I just came from a visitation with a family who's husband/dad died. But wanna hear something great? They have a GIANT sign on the front of the house:

"Our Pa is home with Jesus. Isn't that cool!?"

What a blessed time of fellowship and memories tonight.

I'd come up with some wisecrack but I'm just too beat right now. LOL

People who get caught up in Lent would do well to read the thread "Council of Trent" and the referenced source.
