Iowa threatens to arrest UN election observers...

    Some states are trying to impliment voter picture id laws. For the most part, the courts have granted temporary injunction to their enforcement. Mostly, due to the short lead time between the laws passage and election day.

    Check IDs at the door is going to be a terribly complicated procedure, especially considering that most poll workers are volunteers. It would require voter lists at the door and at the table.

    That's why I think this story is just show. Who is not allowed within 100 ft or 300 of the door? All non-voters?

    Beside, what do the polls have to hide? Does anyone really think that 2-3 European petty officials are going to intimidate anyone?

    I think what the States fear is a bunch of UN observers, their entourage (hosts, local guides and support staff) and assorted media showing up at polling places trying to just waltz in. With the last two components we are not talking about one to three persons. We are talking about up to 20 or so persons who may or may not have any regard for the local poll workers.

    The UN can send as many observers as it wants. We can pass as many voter laws as we want and none of it'll make a difference so long as we cast our votes on easily hacked E voting machines.

    The election results can be manipulated even with a hundred millions eyes on the machines and the voters themselves. For some information that actually matters go to . . .

    I think what may be happening is in previous elections the observers and their hosts kept a fairly low profile. In this go round, matters have been amplified.

    What a crock......does everyone applaud when UN observers in unstable countries......so what iss the hassles.....re political enemies orchestrating this perhaps?????

    BG, I think you've gotten to the nub of the matter. It's not so much the observers that's gotten the AGs riled up. It's the Democratic Party operatives who would want to use them for their own partisan ends. I'm not sure about Iowa, but the Texas AG is a Republican.

    Only because of P. T. Barnums like this governor.

    What exactly are these powerless observers going to do if they don't like something?

    This was just a chance for a governor to get his name in the national media - full stop.

    Apologies - it wasn't even the governor, it was an attorney general. Even worse.

    Having a few UN observers at polling places isn't a big deal.

    Having the Supreme Court look at international laws for guidance isn't a big deal.

    Going to the UN for approval isn't a big deal.

    Or is it?

    Look at our history. Major changes that took this Republic to a democracy to whatever we have today didn't happen in big steps.

    Look at our history. Major changes that took God out of our schools and such didn't happen in big steps.

    Slow, gradual changes took place at the rate the "sleeping" population would absorb them without giving serious thought to the implications.

    Democrats inviting UN observers was simply turning up the heat under a pot of frogs by another small increment. Didn't hurt a thing, as the water is still comfortable, to some. Others are beginning to sweat a bit too much and are looking over the rim of the pot to see who/what is controlling the heat.

    How many more "it's not a big deal" increments can we absorb before John Doe looks around and asks "What happened?" Just as the lid is firmly latched onto the pressure cooker and there's no means of escape.

    The traditional New England town meeting held honest votes because everyone knew everyone, and everyone could count the hands. It is not possible to have an honest large scale secret ballot election.
