Wine - and beer - do have nutritional value as well as medicinal value - red wine is particularly rich in flavenoids. It's good for the heart and soothes the mind (in moderation, of course).

Pork, the other white meat, is tasty, especially Chinese roast pork. Mmmmm, nummers, nummers.

I like the greasy part such as bacon, its bacon, its bacon and sausage and you can throw in some pork chops while you at it. Other than that I won't hardly eat pork.

If you are going to say that pigs are not clean---let me ask you this: have you ever visited a poultry processessing plant--like Tyson? The Levitical dietary laws were given to Israel--they didn't have our modern day methods of butchering animals. We are not under the Levitical dietary laws now. Like I said previously in this thread, there are certain groups of people whose doctrines and teachings prohibit the eating of pork. It's true, that pork is not the healthiest meat to consume, but I prefer pork (I was raised Jewish) to chicken. Also, check into how hot dogs are made.

Well, if there are holes in the pigs feet man put them there. Actually pigs have no bodily way to release heat...one of the reasons they will roll in mud.

Pigs are really a very clean animal, given half a chance. I don't know what the animals were back in Lev. I love people who refuse to move to the century in which we live, and ignore te New Testament to boot...

    Cheers,

    Jim

Don't want to start the wine-beer debate again, but when my late husband was alive, he consumed wine and beer like it was going out of style (he died from ethanol toxicity). He took humungous amounts of vitamins to counteract the effects the alcohol had on his body. Any nutritional value that wine and beer have does NOT come from the alcohol--it comes from the FRUIT or GRAIN (whatever nutritional value is left after fermentation kills the fruit or grain). It's a known fact that ethanol destroys vitamins your body needs--look at any book on nutrition and vitamins.

It now seems clear that regular consumption of up to 1-2 drinks a day (1 standard drink is approximately equal to 5 oz, or 125 ml, of 13% wine) does reduce mortality, due to a 10%–40% lower risk of coronary heart disease, especially for those over the age of 35 or so (see Alcohol consumption and health).

In Lev 11 God says that we should not eat rats, cats, dogs and bats.

In Isaiah 66 He says that those who eat rats will suffer the wrath of God in fire and brimstone.

I vote that we pay attention to the word of God - "the maker" says that rats cats dogs and bats "are not food" for us.

Is God saying that we SHOULD be eating the rats, cats, snakes and bats IF someone "sets them before us" to eat?

ARe they GOOD for you when "someone sets them before you"??

In Isaiah 66 God says he will "destroy" those who desecrate their body by eating such things. Did He mean "except if someone sets these mice before you to eat"??

I saw a coyote outside my window yesterday - he walked past the window just sniffing about for food - probably looking for "rats, cats, dogs, snakes and bats".

He looked kind of hungry to me.

Should WE be eating like him??

Lev 11 - God says "no".

Isaiah 66 - God says "no".

Here is an opportunity to ask a question I have always wondered about.

If pigs were unclean and could not be eaten, why did the Jews raise pigs?

It would seem to me that would be one of the Pharisees prohibitions.

I would've thought that pigs sweated. Because burn victims sometimes get pig skin temporarily I thought their skin was like ours - sweaty. Dogs and cats sweat through the soles of their feet, not through their skin.

They had parasites that could be transmitted via their flesh if it wasn't cooked thoroughly. That is rare nowadays, especially for factory-raised hogs which are kept in santitary pens.

There is nothing condoning the idea of "raising pigs" in the bible for Jews.

But the issue is not "just" that they were unclean. After all - dolphins are unclean according to Lev 11 and their skin was used in the ceiling of the temple. Camels are unclean and so also horses and donkeys according to Lev 11 but it was not a problem to have them around. The problem with "raising pigs" was that they only had one purpose - and that was the one that was forbidden in God's Word in Lev 11.

When the demons were cast out of the men of the Gadara - the demons asked if they would be allowed to enter the swine (and of course - kill the herd). Jesus granted them that request. But that was not so "he could win" - he could ALREADY cast out demons!

Compare that to living under a bridge and your broken home somewhere.

    Last time I checked, a pig wasn't a bat.

If you're going to observe the whole of the levitical code, you must also...

-not wear a poly/cotton or any blend shirt (Leviticus 19:19)
-destroy your oven if it has ever cooked an unclean animal (Leviticus 11:35)

Ya'll made me stop eating a hot dog to answer this thread. :tongue3:
