Almost every professed believer in the Word of God will agree that drunkenness is sin. They will tell you that God does not want our minds clouded with alcohol, but rather that we are to be controlled by the Holy Spirit.

And yet, many of these same people will turn around and say it is ok to pump a child or young adult with mind-altering drugs such as Ritalin because that child or young adult has ADD or ADHD.

If alcohol is wrong because it clouds the mind and will cause us to forget the law or pervert judgment, why would it be right to cloud the mind with drugs?

Do we serve a God of double standards?

Should Ritalin and other mind-altering drugs be administered in our children? or should we seek out the old paths and walk therein when parents raised their children with love and discipline as the Word of God commanded them to do?

It seems the walls that were once the bulwark of family values are methodically being torn down through government, psychiatry, and oppression by those who will not adhere to the Word of God in their own lives and homes.

The teaching of the Word of God is no longer allowed in schools. The right to discipline our youth has been replaced with threats of jail for parents if they paddle the child. Homosexual relationships are no longer a shame, but are now an accepted alternative lifestyle. And it is only getting worse.

Scripture says, "Blessed is that man in whom, when I come, I find so doing." Doing what? Doing the will of God.

Are we doing the will of God? Are we truly training our children in the way they should go? or are we shirking responsibility by allowing their minds to be clouded over by drugs?

I believe God blessed man with Doctors and Medical advancement to include what you call mind altering drugs. I more see Ritalin as mood stabilizer but we can go with your definition.

God gives us these advancements to be used to his glory. Not using them is the essence of the story of the man in the flood who passed on the boat, helicopter etc... waiting God to save him. God said I sent you several chances... I believe he is saying the same regarding medical advancements, I sent you help..

Also, anesthesia and other drug would also fit your definition so to answer your question if a medical trained professional makes that diagnosis them I think it should be considered.

Throws away the Scriptures in the New Testament that admonish us to be vigilant and sober, doesn't it?

Do you think we shouldn't have surgery as well?

Here is a site exposing the dangers of Ritalin and the politics of the ADHD movement....written by Peter Breggin, M.D., a psychiatrist:

The "mind altering" drugs which are being emphasized here are those which are used to "change the behavior" of hyperactive children, (i.e. Ritalin) because parents don't want to deal with them. My pediatrician told me that both of my children needed to be put on Ritalin...I refused to do so...and simply changed their diet and applied the "board of correction" to their posteriors....they both turned out great. One is an attorney now and the other one owns his own editorial business.

You are comparing apples with oranges when you are speaking of drugs for surgery and drugs to alter the behavior of children.

Not if it means altering a person's brain activity to the point where their minds are clouded on a daily basis.

Cancer patients take meds that can cloud their minds, but the aternative is to suffer greatly with pain and other side effects. Surely you are not saying they shouldn't take drugs.

As far a Ritalin, we have a nephew that took it for awhile when he was a young boy and he was unable to function on it. He just became a zombie and his parents refused to give it to him. He eventually "grew out" of his behavior problems. So, I know there are some that should not use Ritalin. But I wouldn't go so far as to say that it doesn't help anybody. I think it should be monitered closely as with all drugs.

IMHO, more kids in our area are being damaged by the effects of these controlled substances than are being helped. It's sick how drugged some of the foster kids are when they show up here. Then they call them "Special Ed" when they aren't. They are fed junk food which causes hyperactivity, and problems learning. Drugged again with hormones and chemicals thru food which is not organic, or contains additives.

It's never a good idea to go cold turkey ceasing these controlled substances, and it's a shock to the kid's system. Even drug addicts are told to cease ingesting the illegal drugs slowely. And kids can get crazy, placing themselves in harms way if the meds are needed to some extent. Can't ween them all off, some may need medicine to be sober minded.

Lower medications slowely, add in a healthy diet and exercise under their Doctors supervision. This worked for both of our foster kids who were ADHD. We did not spank them (of course). We don't create crazy rules like no running in the house or warn them they might break this or that. If it's expensive and breakable, then it shouldn't be there in the first place. My two cents

SFIC and LInda, do you have MD degrees?
If not you are not qualified to second guess doctors.

Yes, medicine such as Ritalin should be administered...
Now if the meds are given at such a high dose as to cause "drunkenness" they should be cut back, and any DR. would immediately do so.

To withhold medication from a child after the Dr prescribes it is child abuse, and should be punishable by law!

We are qualified more than you realize, tim. We are giving godly advice that God gave to parents thousands of years ago. It worked then.

Follow God's orders, and you can't go wrong.

A boy in our small town was being raised by his Godly grandparents. He was in church all the time and attending a Christian school.

They all attended our church and the 15-year-old boy attended our Christian school with my own kids.

No matter what punishment he got, he could not pay attention in class and always got in trouble.

The doctor wanted him on medication, but the grandparents were counseled by other Christians not to do it.

John Morgan came home from school late one day after serving another detention. His grandfather told him he was grounded.

John found his grandfather's gun, loaded it and chased his grandfather through the house and shot him 3 times point blank.

His grandmother ran out the front door screaming and he chased her down, shot her in the back, and after she fell, shot her 2 more times in the back of the head.

Now, 2 Godly grandparents are dead and John will never get out of prison. You can bet he's on medication now!

What a shame he wasn't on it before his grandparents had to lose their lives... :(

This wasn't a medication problem either. It was spiritual darkness. The boy was rebellious and killed because of a darkened heart... sin.

Sin cannot be covered with pills. The blood of Christ must be applied.

How on earth can you justify saying you are smarter than the doctors?

    Sue,

With all due respect, We ought to obey God rather than man.

God's Word does not say medicate a rebellious son. The problem was rebellion. Too many want to shirk parental duties with rebellious children by either giving them medication to alter their minds, or to ship them off to someone else to deal with.

When does a Christian nation depend on God anymore? Why are children rebellious? turned into killers? disobedient?

The answer is sin plain and simple. And the sin seems to be encouraged when man turns to man for the answer rather than God.

I guess this mentality also thinks CPS invading parents homes to confiscate their children on a supposed abuse, i.e., an allegation that drugs are being withheld, is also valid.

    Truly sad.

SFIC, I think your post title is misleading, the poll is superfluous, and that you are judgmental in holding others to your convictions.

    Oh boy....

Don't forget, you're humble too!

Medications and even alcohol have a place in this world.
Used properly and with control, they are blessing from God.

Cocaine is a strong and potent drug that can be abused.
    It's a mind-bender.
But even so, it is a drug that used properly and in controlled situations can be a life saver.

I agree with this statement, but sometimes it's not 'either-or'.

God gives scientists the knowledge to develop new medicines and He gives the doctors the wisdom to know what to prescribe.

There are times when taking medication IS the will of God, so we are not disobeying by taking what the doctor subscribes.

Yes, I believe Ritalin is abused, but so are any other number of things in the world.

In the case I wrote about, I believe Ritalin may have saved two lives.

The grandparents were raising John in a Godly manner and had done everything they could do short of exorcism. They needed help and they should have gotten it from the doctor.

They were my friends and two of the Godliest Christians I have ever met in my life.

Doctors or God? Sometimes they're on the same side...

If God doesn't want minds clouded with alcohol, why would He want them clouded with drugs?

We used to preach years ago that the answers to all of life's problems was in the Word of God.

Sadly, that is not being preached anymore. But rather, we can turn to medicines and man rather than God's Word.

Is there any wonder America is no longer the blessed nation she used to be?
