I have a relative who believes any "misrepresentation" of one's self is a lie, and so that makes it a sin. He believes it is a sin to get your hair highlighted or colored because in essence "it's a lie, not your true hair color." He views make-up, nail polish or fake nails, contact lenses, pierced ears, and plastic surgery to be a sin because he considers them a misrepresentation of the true looks of a person. Is there a biblical basis for this viewpoint? Just wondered about your thoughts on this. I'm not sure how to answer his logic.

The just shall live by faith. We are not under the law but led of the Spirit, that which is not of faith is sin are a few scriptural principles which come to mind.

Just because your relative is convicted of sin in this area doesn't mean everyone should follow suit.

Is your relative overweight? If so, then a diet is in order because the appearance he is presenting is not what it should be.

Underweight? Same thing about the appearance, but he needs to gain more weight

I don't see what contact lenses have to do with anything.

Wearing glasses is even worse a distortion of one's true looks. If anything contact lenses sould fit right in with his view as being correct.

IMO and FWIW, this is a little overkill concerning the letter of the law.

    But, that's just my opinion.

Let's see, does he shave, get his hair cut, wear glasses?

Is his house painted anywhere, inside or out? Does he mow his lawn, trim the shrubbery?

    Just curious.

Yeah, he gets haircuts, etc. The deal with contacts is that if you wear them, you're making people believe you have great vision, he thinks. With glasses, it's obvious you don't, so you're not "lying." But, he'll only accept scripture, not my personal opinion about his mowing the yard, painting, etc.

Does he take a bath to make people think he smells nice?

I preached a sermon one time on hypocrisy when I first started out pastoring my first church... At one point I used the illustration of a teen trying to influence another teen to date him. He would become something he normally wouldn't be to get the date, and I said to the effect that all of us have been hypocrites at one point in life...

Man, did I get it on the way home from my wife!!!
She said she could have crawled under the seat when I called everyone in church a hypocrite!

To answer you question... no, it is not a sin.
And as for contacts... glasses would be the same thing...
    or hearing aids....

    Or fake legs... etc...

OK, I gotta go mow for 4 hours...

thing is, abcgrad, this might be a time when you just let him live by his own convictions and leave it alone. If he believes this then why convince him to go against his own conscience?

It might be another thing if he is calling YOU a liar for doing these sorts of things.......

I don't wear contacts to misrepresent. I wear contacts to see. Tell this person there are more important things in life than to get off on these tangents.

Yet everyone would jump all over him if he said the same about something that seamed "worldly".
    what i mean is:
If someone adheres more to the law however extreme or unnecessary people pass it off as conviction...on the other hand if he had wine with dinner or listened to "questionable music" people would not accept conviction as an excuse.
This person is perverting the scripture.

    Good points.

Hmm what about soap and deodorants?

Aren't we covering up a natural God-given smell with scents and perfumes? You know, what we really smell like is not very pleasant but it's the "real you".

How about a beard, does he have a beard or does he "deceive" people by shaving it off?

    This could get very legalistic.

Forget about answering his logic. The guy is steeped in legalism and it has become his trap. Ask him to give scripture on his view.

It's overkill, but I wouldn't try to convince him otherwise. Let him paddle his own canoe ---- but if he is beating you over the head with it, just tell him that you and he aren't going to agree and you'd rather not discuss it anymore.

Does he speak with good grammar in order to trick people into thinking he isn't an idiot?

    (Sorry. Too much coffee.)

I agree with DQuixote. To his own master he stands or falls.

Many years ago, I attended a church where it was a sin for the women to wear make up or jewelry. Yet the men could wear rings, cuff links, and tie pins. When I ask about it, the answer was Jezebel painted her face. I said so what? But that was a good enough reason for them.

Just agree with him that everyone is a sinner.

Give thanks to our Lord Jesus for His abundant mercy and love that covers those sins.

Then be careful he doesn't hit you with that log sticking out of his eye.

    peace to you:praying:

Thanks, y'all. I know I can't change his way of thinking, but I had hoped to find some scripture to deflect his constant mini sermons (aimed at me) at our next family gathering. You know, give him something to chew on while I go comb my highlighted hair and file my painted nails and powder my nose. . .

I like the comment about not living under the law. That might help me explain that I can disagree with him and still be right with God. Thanks.

Didn't Jesus change his appearance when he appeared to John in Revelation...
I mean, maybe it was contacts that made his eyes flame!
OH Boy did I just say that?

JUST KIDDIN, TRYING TO ADD A LITTLE HUMOR TO YOUR SITUATION!
    (Revelation 1:14) His head and [his] hairs [were] white like wool, as white as snow; and his eyes [were] as a flame of fire;
