I don't think the two are emotionally comparable. I can discipline my child and get the same effect rather than causing them bodily harm.

Not sure if you noticed but adults are having a serious conversation in here. You can go back to playing with your Star Wars toys, we'll be back to tuck you in later.

Proverbs 22:15 Folly is bound up in the heart of a child, but the rod of discipline will drive it far away.

I never hit my kid (my father beat me at a moments notice and when he was personally frustrated) so I decided not to use violence....and guess what, he( my son) is a good young man, compassionate to others and good to his parents. Is he a saint? No and he makes mistakes....but they are teachable moments....ones that bond us together more than I could ever imagine.

Any form of discipline can be abused. Parents have no business disciplining while they are angry. Growing up not only was I abused but I watched my mother getting beat to a bloody pulp. Visited her in the hospital more times than I can count.

Even with all the childhood abuse I was able to raise my kids without abusing them all the while applying corporal punishment when it was necessary without abusing my children.

I do not now nor have I ever "hit" my kids. I did spank them and there is a clear difference. If you do not want to spank your kids then good for you. I hope it does well for you.

Wow. I don't know where you are going with that but I feel like it's probably not contributing in any way to this thread. This is called trolling.

Thanks for this. I've spanked my kids and I've always come away feeling emotionally defeated. I felt like I took a bad situation and made it worse.

Yup. I'm sure our parents went through it as well.

Thanks for posting your story man. Tough to talk about and I feel what for what you are going through with your own daughter. Being a parent is the scariest thing in the world sometimes.

Agreed. I'm not going to sit here and judge those who do spank their kids because it is a personal decision one must make when parenting. I've made a decision after trying it that it just isn't for me. Most people know there is a line that you shouldn't cross. Sorry to hear about your experiences Mitch. This has been a good thread. Appreciate everyone that have shared their stories.

Thanx. I gave the problem up to God a few years ago. I'm starting to talk about it after about six years of keeping it in.

Maybe ya did and maybe ya didn't. Did you get frustrated and hit them outa anger? See if they ever tell ya later in life they felt you were terrorizing and abusive then you need to really have a long talk with them....maybe even apologize. But ifthey tell ya "dad, we know you were trying your best to raise us," then you have accomplished something. But its never to late to express your love and concern for them....that's part of being a parent....kinda an executive privalige you have so use it wisely.

Good question. I tell myself it wasn't out of anger but I'll never really be sure if that was true or not.
