1Cor 11:14 Doth not even nature itself teach you, that, if a man have long hair, it is a shame unto him?

1Cor 11:15 But if a woman have long hair, it is a glory to her: for [her] hair is given her for a covering

As a bible believer I believe a man is to have short hair and a woman is to have long hair. What is your opinion.

My opinion is that we're not under the law, so the length of our hair is immaterial.

Besides, Sampson did pretty well with long hair.

Now Johnv, The text is the New Testament, so it is not under the law.
Now Sampson had a Nazerite vow and we have NO nazerite vows now. That was under the Law. Besides Sampson may not have had long hair, He was not to cut it. God may had kept it a the same length under the vow.

    Hello Jailminister,
Yes, I take these verses literally. I also take the ones preceeding them literally. I am to wear a headcovering when I pray and prophesy and that men are to uncover their heads when they do the same. Women are the glory of men and are to cover their glory. Men are the glory of God and are to uncover their heads as a symbol of Authority and Headship.

Amen, Headcoverlady. You may get made fun of, but I agree it is better to do it God's way. [IMG]

HCL is being consistent with the context of the verse, so I don't see wy wnyone should make fun of her.

BTW - just because it's in the NT doesn't negate the fact that we're not under the law. The NT does not have greater weight than the OT. Both are equal. At least that's what folks on the board have told me when I've brought up similar points.

When it says we're no longer under the law, all that means is that what we do, we do out of obedience, not for salvation.

So while HCL covers her head out of obedience to the Lord, it is not a sin for a woman to have her head uncovered if she so chooses. Likewise, a man can choose to keep his hair short out of obedience, but it is no sin for a man to have long hair (the exception is when a man wears his hair in a manner so as to pass himself off as a woman, which is a form of deception).

    Oh Really, Johnv.
How many other commandments are options.
You must have missed something somewhere to pick and chose.
Long Hair on men is SIN.
Short hair on women is SIN.
They violate the scriptures. God put them in the bible for a reason and we are to obey.
    Not my opinion, God's Word.

Just curious, what is your definition of 'long' and 'short'?

td, in the multitude ot times this particular subject has been hashed and rehashed on the board, and else where for that matter...that is exactly the point that no one seems to be able to state imphatically absolutely with no doubt whatsoever. what is the definition of 'long' and 'short?

None of these issues whether it be wearing silk or polyester, pants or dresses, makeup or no makeup, short hair, long hair or no hair will make a person's salvation moot.

This is not an issue of "the Bible says" Because the Bible does not say specifically. I defy anyone to point out a scripture that specifies what is short and what is long as far as outward appearance of the way a person, male or female decides to wear their hair.

Furthermore...show me where it says either is a sin? It just doesn't say that.

A woman with hair to her ankles isn't less of a sinner in God's eyes as a woman with no hair because of Chemotherapy or a woman with hair that is neatly kept above her shoulders. Likewise a man's hair is long when? When it gets a little scraggly around the edges? When it touches the tops of his ears, or the top of his collar, when it touches the top of his shoulders or the middle of his back? When is it long? And where in the Bible does it say this?

The ground is level at the cross. And this observance is a matter of preference to obey what their personal interpretation decides is long and what is short. And whether this issue is of the utmost importance in signifying their Christianity, their salvation or their love for God.

self piety is no better than Mother Teresa, when some people follow societal hang ups from another age and proclaim it a must for the 21st century. I use electric light bulbs, not candles; candles burn the eyes.

    Cheers,

    Yes,
I do get made fun of quite often. But, God does not make fun of me and I get to witness because people ask me what I believe all the time.

    Charlotte,
I agree that headcoverings and hair length have nothing to do with salvation. But, after we are saved we follow the Lord and do it His way. Or atleast we should try. I know you are a servant of the Lord, not saying you are not.

It does say in verse 6, "For if the woman be not covered, let her also be shorn; but if it be a shame for a woman to be shorn or shaven, let her be covered."

Shorn means cut off and shaven means shaven. In my understanding of this verse it is a shame for a woman to have shorn, (cut off) or shaven hair.

And then in verse 15:"...it is a glory to her." Why would we women want to cut off what God calls a glory?

And why would a man want something that is called a shame in the Bible.

I think most people know what long and short is.

I had a childs Bible story book with this "picture" of Jesus with waist length hair. I put it in the trash can. I thought it was disgusting.

First, we need to look at the context of the passage, which begins in verse 2. Oh and watch out there is a divine priciple in verse 3.

"But I would have you know that the head of every man is Christ; and the head of the woman is the man; and the head of Christ is God."

Principle: our subordination and authority as men and women

The text after this are examples of subordination in customs and nature.

Did you know that there are three cycle to hair: growth, rest and fall out. Estrogen slow the process promoting long growth. Testosterone speed it up promoting short hair.

In Corinth head covernings were a sign of submission, that was apart of the culture. This was for Christians and heathens. This was also apart of Jewish and Roman culture. Today it is part of the Arab culture.

Paul was making the point that "men and women were not on the same level of function in God's design" MacArthur This is proven through two examples.

Men and women should be distinctivly different and one way is showing masculenity and femininity. Today, the veil or head covering is not a symbol of submission in all cultures. But, a woman's hair and dress should be distinctivly feminine and demonstrate womanly lovlyness and submissiveness. Men should be masculine and responibly and lovingly authoritative.

My wife shows her submission by having hair long. Paul says that is her covering. Should women have head covernings? If they want to, but it is not a sin not to.

Should a man have short hair. What is short hair? Is long hair a sin, no, it is shameful, not a sin.

    How long is too long?
    How short is too short?
These verses do not tell us.

I've been thinking a lot about this verse,
1Cor 11:14 Doth not even nature itself teach you, that, if a man have long hair, it is a shame unto him?

Now when it says nature, what does it mean? The males of God's creation? What about lions? Male lions have all the hair, lots of long hair. So what does this verse mean when you consider creation?

I believe that we ARE under the LAW. God's LAw! We still reference the bible as God's word, yesterday, today and tomorrow. The bible, ALL OF IT, is God's word, and His instruction manual (for lack of better words) for us to live by.

So, men should keep hair short and the women should have long hair. I don't think we should all have ankle length hair, but shoulder length and below. Women should look like women and vise versa. [IMG]

Well, you are entitled to your legalism. The gospel has set me free, and if HE has set me free, then I am free, indeed.

Historical records show men with long hair. Paul is talking about the difference between godly women and the prostitutes of the day, whose heads were shorn. Cultures change, and so do we. You are NOT a witness to Christianity by dressing back to other times, YOU are a witness by your life and what flows from your mouth. Why do some insist on making an anachronism of Christianity?

    Cheers,

    Jim
