    to removing the battery from a laptop that is mostly left plugged in?

    If it is an old NiCad it might, but most are Lit ion and don't think it makes any difference - at least have never read anything about it.

    Literally thousands of articles on the subject of extending your laptop's battery life; this is the only one I know of that recommends leaving the battery in while the laptop is plugged into AC power.

    (plus, it's always annoying when you move around and the power cord disconnects, and the laptop immediately shuts down....)

    If you should lose power while your hard drive was spinning could lose data without a battery source.
