We're not called Funnymentals for nothing.

It seems that since we are all going to love each other in Heaven even if we don't like each other then we should start now. Personally, the pastor was wrong.

I was calling and checking his references. One of his references was an IFB pastor he had at one point in his life. We were having a really good conversation. However, when the man found out our church was Southern Baptist he got really quiet and just said "Oh......well it has been nice talking to you, goodbye."

How do you go from having a great conversation about church, ministry, education, family and then "SBC" comes up and shuts the entire conversation down?

I suspect that the separation was there a long time before you came along PastorSBC [IMG]

I suspect that the pastor's reaction issued from disappointment that his boy had fallen away and was descending into the miry clay from which the pastor himself had once been delivered by God's grace. [IMG]

Had the topic been other than it was, he might have been quite capable of conversing civilly with his SBC brother.

He was being silly. Everyone knows Southern Baptist cooties aren't contagious over the phone.

Off topic: take heart you baldies -- my dad told me his brains had pushed his hair out...

I'm sure that is the case with you, too.

Easy to rush to judgement when ya have half the story. No telling what this pastor had been thru with SBC's in the past. Perhaps he decided to end the conversation before he could inappropriately express himself.

I still think the seperation thing is often worn as a badge of courage. I have been snubbed and whispered about by IFB's (even a pastor)in our area on more than one occasion. They didnt even try to hear my story, so I dont think its that.

You guys with facial hair--I'm ashamed of you. If God had meant us to have beards or mustaches, He would have put hair on our faces!! :D

We had a community thanksgiving service last november...all evangelical churches were there. The service went well.

Our local IFB did not participate...that church's pastor preached a four-week sermon on the apostacy of the neighboring SBC church's pastor (a well-loved pastor of 35 years!), because a "heathen" pastor (non-baptist) "preached in his pulpit." Sheesh.

Of course, none of the IFB folks were actually AT this service, so I'm not sure where their sermon fodder is coming from. But, it's kind of backfiring on them. The "apostate" pastor's walk with God makes these criticisms sound ludicrous (which they are).

Most of the IFBs around us locally refuse to associate with other denoms. or even other baptists... They think that since we are not IFB, then we are not a true church, therefore we are either heretics, or just playing church...

    I have heard that preached.

I truly feel sorry for them, because they are going to wake up in Heaven and look around and think they are in Hell because the Presbys are there!

This is a typical problem with fundamentalism. We do not know who our enemies are. We spend too much time fighting the wrong fight. Satan loves to see disunity among the brethren. It cuases to major on the minors.

Even if I disagree with someone it never right to be unchristian like toward them.

To be fair, it isn't just in fundamentalism... It is in every denomination. Mike, you hit the nail on the head... It is about being Christ like at all times.

I complain alot about this facet of IFBs around here, because they are the most vocal... But in reality, it is everywhere...

Anytime someone begins thinking they have the corner on truth they are walking on dangerous grounds.

    PastorSBC,

I have to say, if I was in your area I'd love to go hear you preach. Maybe we'll have an excuse to be in Missouri someday! [IMG]

Have you considered calling him back to ask those other things? You can mention the importance of throroughly checking references for hiring pastors and your respect for the IFB.

I know it seems unlikely but maybe the issue wasn't separation from the SBC and it was something else. Or maybe talking with you will help reconcile IFB-SBC differences in that area. Just some thoughts.
