I was just curious if this board is primarily IFB.

It seems that when I post SBC, I have to duck or get blasted with snide remarks about how evil the SBC is.

Do people not realize that since we Southern Baptists are autonymous (sp?) that there are good ones as well as bad ones?

I happen to belong to a very conservative church where deacons don't meet outside and puff on smokes, nor do they go home and slip a bottle out of the pantry and get drunk. Although there are hypocrites in every church, in general our core people are as good as gold and have the love of Jesus in their hearts. Plus, they show it by their fruits in helping those who need help.

It is a little frustrating to hear people complain about churches in the South, when they have never visited the ones close to where I live and met the good Christians here. [IMG]

Are all IFB churches perfect?

This is a Baptist Board. You have to realize that even amongst us SBCers, we have differing opinions about the morality or immorality of the SBC, its leadership, doctrines, and church practices. There are some things where I think they have it right and then there are others where I think they are wrong. Overall, I think it is still good. However, you can't expect all SBCer's to agree on everything. So, why would you expect non-SBCers to agree on everything. I figure there are some independents who are pro-SBC, anti-SBC, Neutral, and everywhere in between on both sides of neutral.

Ok, here's the lowdown for posting on here.

If you're SBC the conservative IFB's will blast you.

If you're conservative IFB the SBC's will blast you.

If you're liberal in your politics, and everyone is according to everyone else, you will be blasted by the conservatives.

If you're conservative in your politics, and everyone is in their own opinion, you will be blasted by the liberals.

If you're not you, you will be blasted by them.

Other than that, it's a wonderfully loving board where thoughts, ideas, prayer, and encouragement are exchanged freely among the members.

Welcome to real people who are really trying to be real Christians, but who occasionally fail and put their failure online for all to see and gasp at.
There are a couple mean ones who will bite you every time regardless of anything, but for the most part nobody's looking to roast you. It may seem like that at times since those who are the most obnoxious are the loudest and most long winded and never quit typing but simply go on and on about this and that and the other...uhhh, I gotta go. :D

I am more or less neutral on the SBC issue, am IFB, and can, of course answer your rhetorical question with a resounding no - in fact, no IFB church is perfect, for like, SBC churches, they are all made up of sinners saved by the grace of God.

I wonder how the Bapticostals feel about having to duck and put up with snide remarks and be ripped on for there beliefs by a select number of SBC and IFB people?

Phillip, this board is weighted more toward the IFB than American Baptists are in general.

There is a significant SBC presence (including among the moderation team), but you will be hard pressed to find many ABC-USA folks or representatives from the African American Baptist denominations.

No matter what position you take on the board, you will find someone willing to "blast" you.

Me, I'm an equal opportunity blaster.

Probably about the same as IFB's feel about having to duck and put up with snide remarks and be ripped on for their beliefs by a select number of SBC and Bapticostals people.

Funny how the Bapticostal issue comes up. I am admittedly a Baptist, Dr. Bob is admittedly a Baptist, so are almost everybody posting in this thread.

Bapticostals are admittedly "Bapticostal". See the difference?

You were upset Phil about having to duck and put up with snide remarks from IFB people. Which is fair enough, I would be upset about that as well. Yet are we innocent of it ourselves? Do we sledge other Baptist Denominations that we do not agree with, whether we mean to or not?

We condemn hypocritical groups that DEMEAN THE NAME "BAPTIST" by teaching non-baptist doctrine and then sullying our fine name.

I wish pentecostals had the honesty to call themselves "pentecostal". They do not belong on ANYTHING associated with the word Baptist.

I've met more SBC types around the BB than any other. Some Primitives. And a few ifbX (extreme - kjvo types). But would think many of us are just plain ifb or loosely associated with regular historic Baptists.

What if we feel that the IFB are a hypocritical group that demean the name Baptist because amongst them there are some that teach King James Version Onlyism? Should we condemn them with Snide Remarks and Sledges too?

In fact how about the SBC and Carnival cruise lines and profting from Gay Cruises? Does that not "demean the name Baptist" as well. Should SBC members get the same treatment?

Actually, my post was somewhat tongue-in-cheek. I am really not upset. I am gigging the IFBers a little bit since they gig us some. Dr. Bob, my favorite moderator is IFB and I respect every doctrine he has spoken so far. I would love to go to his church.

Things may be different in Australia, but typical Baptist doctrine is pretty much the same across the board (to a certain extent, except possibly "freewill" and churches that do not believe in eternal security.)

Although Bapticostals call themselves Baptist, they also call themselves "Bapticostal" because they have accepted the beliefs of another denomination--that of Pentecostalism, thus the name "Bapti-costal".

I would not expect to go to a Pentecostal website and tell them I am a Pentetist because I am a Pentecostal with certain Baptist beliefs that do not agree with the Pentecostal beliefs.

Yes, I agree, I am probably guilty of the same thing, but we are talking apples and oranges. First of all, the IFB has pretty much the exact same beliefs and doctrines as the SBC. We at the SBC have pretty much the same beliefs as the IFB. Where we differ is very minor compared to the major doctrines of Salvation by Grace, Calvanism, church ordinances, etc. Most of our differences lie in the way the associations handle our missionary teams (at least I would suspect). Among some other minor things. I do not believe they think that we are as independent from the convention as we really are.

First, let me explain that I am using some dry humor here and I'm not mad at any IFBer. If I lived where they do I would most likely be IFB. There are simply none in my area. If they gig me, I just absolutely MUST gig them back some or I would be slipping. :D

So, therefore when I say an IFB says we are all hypocrits in the south, it is a statement regarding the fact that I do not follow my own beliefs. On the other-hand, when a Bapticostal comes in with a belief from another denomination that we Baptists generally disagree with, that is another story. (Ref: Look at the vote on Pentecostal "speaking in tongues" to see the Baptist beliefs.)

This is NOT a matter of tolerance here. Where do you limit tolerance on matters of doctrine? Do we limit those who are Mormon and keep the Baptimons from posting because they believe that Jesus and Satan are brothers and Jesus was once a regular human who made "god status"?

Every Bapticostal that I know who has posted has admitted that they believe in the major three Pentecostal doctrines that we Baptists generally disagree with. Those are:

    1) Speaking in unknown tongues, without a reason, except for self-edification. (Babbling) Supposedly speaking in a tongue of angels, or even another language when there is no person there to hear the message. Plus, latter day revelation, illumination, whatever its called.

    2) Baptism of the Holy Spirit at a time other than salvation, sometimes as indicated by the "speaking of tongues" as described above.

    3) Loss of salvation -- never knowing for sure if we are good enough -- keeping salvation by works not by grace.

These are ALL Pentecostal doctrines, so our limit for tolerance should always exclude those who do not accept Baptist Biblical doctrine. The beliefs above are not Biblical and I will stand against a non-Biblical doctrine ANY-DAY. Just as I don't stand for KJVonlyism.

Pentecostals are trying to take over other denominations and whether we like it or not they are succeeding where people are not grounded in scripture. (Which is our fault.)

Sorry, but this is NOT the same issue.

If we allow Pentecostalism, as I said before maybe we should be tolerant towards Mormonism?

I believe Dr. Bob would correct you in that he is a Reformed Baptist/ Historic Independent Fundamental Baptist and not the typical IFB found in the deep south who force women to wear dresses, no makeup, etc.

If you read the thread about this awhile back, you'd find most give an excuse for this type of demeaning the "Baptist" name. It's called money. It depends on whose ox is being gored.

From where I sit, this board seems to be mostly southern white folk, with some major exceptions. And some of those exceptions used to be southern, but moved.
Not because we don't allow other folk, just because it happens to be.
I'm an exception myself, being a white northerner, whose church used to be ABCUSA, but recently switched to CBA. But we still retain a little of the ABC ways, mostly in terms of government style, and that we actually allow women deacons (although we women deacons only serve communion when there are positively no men around - has happened once or twice when it snowed or there was much sickness among the male deacons).

This is a very interesting thread: SBC, FIB, CBA, ABC, MIC, KEY, MOUSE. LOL. What intrigues me the most is the KJV only issue. Can you believe there are people out there who realy think God is powerful enough to preserve His words in an every-word Bible in the english language? No, God probably intended for us to come up with scores of "versions",(some omitting words, phrases, or even entire verses)so we can all bicker and fuss over which one is right and which one is wrong and which one is better. There is no way God could have preserved His words in one English version (i.e. the KJV). What, do you think He's omnipotent or something.

Bro. Lewis, we love ya, but we is gonna eat your theory for lunch!

Do you REALLY believe the KJV is word-for-word, letter-for-letter perfect?

Let's go just this far off track, then we can continue down in the translations section. I just HAVE to have an answer to this one. :D ;)

I got a little chuckle at all the different "types" of baptists chiming in. [IMG]

So, where does a person fit in to all this that holds to IFB distinctives, KJO preferred, but will only claim the title "Christian" ?

    ;)

    In Christian love.
