That they based laws on the Old Testament, their symbolism is everywhere, and they populated America from it's beginnings, even financing the revolution, it does not come close to saying our nation claimed the promise to Israel was theirs. The leap it makes from Washington to Micah , because of a thank-you letter, is huge. But it still never makes the claim.

I'm starting to realize you do not like to answer simple questions.

Do you think George Washington, Thomas Jefferson, Benjamin Franklin, etc. etc. believed they were founding a new Israel in the New World?

Think as you will. I'll let you know who you're dealing with. Someone who isn't baited by those who one easily realizes likes to start fights with Christians. [IMG]

Did you read the article linked?

Yes, I did. Puritans considered their leaving England to be a parallel story to the Jews escaping Egypt. OK. But George Washington, Thomas Jefferson, John Adams, Benjamin Franklin, etc. were not Puritans. Some were what we would call evangelical Christians, but many (most?) of them were Deists, believing in God, but hardly believing in Jesus as a personal Savior.

Also, no one is denying the fact that the U.S. was founded on Judeo-Christian ethics or that symbolism is used in early American architecture.

So my question to you remains: "Do you think that our founding fathers believed they were planting a new Israel in the New World?"

This is the central thesis of "The Harbinger". From that concept flows everything else--the idea that God has specially blessed America, the idea that if we stray God will chastise us. The author thinks the USA is literally a chosen nation favored by God, just like Israel was centuries ago.

This is bunk, of course. Therefore, I don't need to read it or watch a video. I already know it's misguided.

I heard the author speak on God TV the other night, and he laid this out clearly. It sure seems that America is primed for judgement and a fall from greatness and more importantly, His GRACE.

Grace is unmerited favor, not something earned and then lost through behavior. So, in fact, to “fall” from grace, is to begin trusting in works.

Didn't his next prophecy, the “shemitah”, just pass unfulfiled? (Though I heard he had some kind of ‘out’ for that one).

Well, Grace is something He gives to individuals ..... not nations of individuals or a nation of unbelievers! He has judged many nations before us, and we won't be the last if He in fact tarries!

I am not saying the author is infallible. I just said "it SURE seems" like we are primed for judgment! But, thanks for taking the time to respond. I do appreciate your insight!

Between Law and Grace, the whole “national” (corporate) focus was apart of the Law. Grace was about individuals, as no one could else be redeemed for you (and the Church was the body of those already redeemed).
Leaders like this end up treating a secular nation like it's the Church (with him in some ruler/leadership position over it), and expecting everyone to obey God, when many aren't even following Him (if they even believe in Him). That was not the approach the Church was to take, to the world.

America has made a kind of covenant with God:

    OT
Exodus 24:7 And he took the book of the covenant, and read in the audience of the people: and they said, All that the LORD hath said will we do, and be obedient.

    NT
And he said to them, Go you into all the world, and preach the gospel to every creature.

Which America had responded to except (starting in 1973 - Roe Vs Wade) we have gone forth and slaughterer the most helpless among us.

That's not a legitimate “covenant”, at least not like the one with Israel. Some of that is the leaders of a nation attempting to be a “new Israel” (based on a particular belief about the covenants, such as replacement theology).

And what ends up happening, is that while they vow to “ober every command”, they really don't, but then have to excuse the acts they commit that are sin, and then overfocus on other sins they think they're not guilty of, like sexual matters (which is where something like abortion would come in).
What we end up with, is “The nation followed God until the 1970's (or judging by the rest of the sexual revolution, as well as the removal of school prayer 10 years earlier, or the “influence of atheism and Communism”, many will say it was the 1960's), and only now is sinful and earning judgment”.

But this ultimately picks and chooses what is sin, and thus relativizes God's standards just as much as what the nonbelievers we say are bringing this judgment down on us, had done. It's just seeing sin in everyone else, while we think we're automatically “good” for representing the right “culture”. But all human culture is concluded in sin (and any notions of “better” or “worse” do not help, before God).

Why is this topic pinned? The Harbinger in Mormon commentary. Zap it.
