A thought that I had in the "Why was Jesus baptized?" thread brought this question to my mind and I did not want to derail that subject there. So I'll ask it here. Was John the Baptist in line for Head Priest after the kinship of Aaron? If so, then wouldn't that explain why Jesus was baptized of John as a symbolic transfer of the Priesthood over to Jesus who by Mary was in line for the Davidic throne? Thus came the voice of God from Heaven and the Holy Spirit descending upon Him in the form of a dove, "This is My Son, in whom I am well pleased" as if in approval of the old priesthood in John is cut off and the new Priesthood would be eternal in Christ? What are your thoughts?
