I used humor this morning in my sermon...

I was trying to emphasize the need for an ongoing relationship with Christ, and how if we truly love him we will want to spend time with Him.

I used my dating experiences with my wife as examples...

I would drop her off at her house, then as soon as I got back home I would call her and spend hours talking on the phone...

finally we would get tired, and she would say, "I got to go to bed."
I would say,"well hang up and go"
"No, I love you too much"
"No," I would say, "I love you more"
    "I love you most"
"No, I love you the mostest"

And on an on we would go, until finally I said, "hang up",
    "no, you hang up"
    "no, you hang up"
"hey, I got an idea... we both hang up at the same time...."
    "on the count of 3....

    1

    2

    3

    silence.... then, "you still there."
"Well of course, ...I love you"

By the time I told the congregation this... they were laughing histerically,

    Then....

    I blindsided them...

I asked... "Why do you not love Jesus that much?" and "Why does spending 5 to 10 minutes in prayer a day seem like such a chore?"

You could've heard a pin drop... they got my point..

So I went on and explained the need to love Christ so much you can't get enough of him..

Yeah.. my wife hates it when I use her for an illustration... but she was laughing this morning too...

Of course our church was praising God this morning...
We had a teen saved Friday night at our lock-in and she was baptized this morning...
pray for this family.. .they are coming from a RC background.. and this is going to be interesting to see how God works...

I love being a child of God, and watching Him work!!
When you set back and watch Him... it is amazing!!

And to think I dreaded going to the lock-in...i thought I had better things to do...Pastor's work: like prepare a sermon, get my lessons ready...etc...
I started to just let my youth leader take care of everything...

But now I am glad I did go...

Your story just made me laugh even harder because of what I told a co-worker earlier in the week. His fiance is not here right now, so he spends all day emailing her and calling her on the phone.

Well, one day he was telling another worker about this, I was behind him, and I said, "You need to go ahead and marry her so you can start ignoring her."

He knew I was joking. I hope everyone else did.

Maybe we should have a joke telling contest?

I heard one years ago from the pulpit when B. Clinton was in the White House-----I still remember it like it were yesterday

A big robust Texan was eating at a resteraunt and over heard two men talking at the table next to him.

All in one motion the Texan gets up from his seat---walks over to the next table and "POW!!!!!" ---- he knocks one of the other fellas out of his seat and onto the floor----knocked him out---- COLD!!!!!

The fella finally wakes up----gets up from the floor brushing himself off and sits back down in his chair----looks over at the Texan that just hit him and says

"Man!!! What'd you do that for???"

The Texan says, "For what you just said!!!"

The other fellas says, "Man!!! All I said was that Clinton was raising taxes!!"

The Texan looks at him and said---"Man, I am sorry!! I apologize to you!!!! I thought I heard you say that Clinton was raised in Texas!!!!!"

To answer the OP, I do not think that humor is always wrong in a sermon or that it is sinful if something causes laughter.
The OP though was about jokes, which I believe there is no place for in the worship of our Lord and Savior.

Think about what we are there for and think if that is a laughing matter.
We should be joyful, especially in the singing but we are not there to be entertained.

By the way, to all of the posters that references Ecc 3 etc, yes there is a time to laugh. No one argues that point. I laugh all the time and tell jokes etc.
But the worship if our Lord is not the place for that.

yes, there is a time for humor, there is also a time to refrain from humor.
