I am blown away by the speed of page loading (of the BB and elsewhere) in the 24-hours I've had it.

Why oh why did I wait an entire year? The cost is about $35 a month, but out here the cost of unlimited regular phone-line connection is $20.

    A worthwhile investment, methinks.

    Others?

    Welcome to the club! :D

Unfortunately speed is an addiction -- you'll never be able to go back.

I was hooked before I even got it; just the demo blew my mind.

I am completely spoiled. After 17 months on DSL (at home and at work), dial-up is painful, as I learned during a visit to the mother-in-law's house, which is stuck in the doldrums of 56K-land.

To make the addiction worse, we have a router that distributes the connection to three computers, enough for most of us to be online (at high speed) at the same time. It's only a matter of time until I fire up that fourth computer so that even the cats can have access — although they seem to be more interested in sleeping on top of the monitor than surfing.

Come North my dear brother, to the glorious six counties, where you can enjoy broadband as I do, for just £27.00 ($43?) or less.

I live in rural SC and the local non-Bell phone company is *finally* offering 756K DSL for $50/month Free installation and modem.

The catch? Requires a credit check and an 18 month commitment. I won't go into the details but...

Unless God provides a miracle 52K dial-up is where I am stuck while at home.

Is there a 'Green with Envy' icon I could use about now? :D

I have broadband at home, too.

One would think that this is the ultimate, that it just could not get any better than this.

But you know how it is: there will probably be something better than broadband soon.

But until then, it is great!

There is no charge for DSL or Cable where I live. That's right, no charge for DSL and no charge for Cable...BECAUSE IT ISN'T EVEN OFFERED. Daniel Boone kept looking for a place that was so rural that you couldn't even see your nearest neighbor. He visited here once and then decided to move closer to town. [IMG] The Cable company keeps hinting that MAYBE next year we will get internet access. In the mean time I am stuck with not 56K dial-up but I connect at the incredible speed of 26K. As the snail said when riding on the back of the turtle, "WEEEEEEEEE!!!".

I have, but at $60-$70 a month I didn't consider it long. Heck, my wife is still fussing with me about the $18.95 a month for dial-up. :D I think I will just be content with such things as I have (till $29.95 cable comes along)

    Dr. Bob:

Glad you like it. As a person who built my own computer and took A+ cert courses, I'll tell you I still will NOT even deal with dial-up modems. Too temperamental and unreliable (some software bugs actually rendered my old dial-up useless)! With the broadband a.k.a "cable Internet", the 10/100 cards and their software is a breeze to install. Plus, they are so much faster and extremely reliable. Watch out! You may get like our household here by adding a router--- we have 4 computers here on line, more than televisions now! (I did not buy all these, I just upgraded some discarded ones that a local college and some friends thought were past their useful lives.)

I just ordered DSL and should recieve the modem sometime next week. I can't wait. It is only $27 a month, only a $10 increase for a 12 month contract and It will come on my phone bill so I don't have to give debit card information. The final Ok from Jeanne was the fact that she can use the phone while I am online.

I have cable. extremely fast. always on. but there are slow areas too. page load speed depends on the bandwidth of the site you are visiting. BB probably has good bandwidth. Only thing I have to do to maintain speed is to make sure my IP addresses are always refreshed. (disconnect the modem from the card, disconnect from the power, turn off pc, wait one minute, connect modem to card, connect to power, wait for power light to go steady, then power up PC). I am green with envy here in Rural Missouri. I have deacon in my church who lives 3 miles out in the country and has DSL through SPRINT. I'm less than 300 feet from the Sprint Officer here in our little town and they don't even offer it.

Sprint has got to be the worst Telephone Company in the world!

    Still at Dialup 56K. [IMG]

I have always contended that broadband means you can do nothing at higher speeds :D ... That's why I don't have it. However, I do like to go to my brother's house where he has it. Unfortunately, he just moved 7 hours away so his new 10Mbps access won't do me any good. Comcast has a 19:95 a month special for six months. They want to get your hooked and then up the price. My drawback is I need it both home and the office. But I can't afford two connections. Oh well ... I guess my patience will just have to be tried for a while longer ...
