Courses I took at a law school. Doctors and hospitals run into serious legal difficulty treating minors without parental consent, particularly when explicitly against their wishes. However, it is established procedure to get a judge in an emergency to issue an order for transfusions and the like for JWs' children as life-saving measures. I don't recall right now the technical details, such as whether the judge grants temporary custody to DCF, or a social worker or somebody who grants permission for treatment, or orders the treatment proceed directly. That also may vary by state. I seem also to recall surgery or medicine being ordered for children of Christian Science church members. The only problem, of course, is when they cannot find a judge in time.
