According to 1 Sam 8:19-1 Sam 9: 1-2, Saul was the first king of Israel, selected by God through Samuel, the prophet.

    Cheers,

    :D ;)

I have played this semantic game many times - True - Saul was chosen by God to be the first king of Israel - but -

Abimelech - was made by man to be the first king in Israel - Judges 9:6 - And all the men of Shechem gathered together, and all the house of Millo, and went, and made Abimelech king, by the plain of the pillar that was in Shechem.

Jim - it seems that there just might be a subject for a devotional in the Abimelech account!!

Dan, Abimilech killed everyone in his path, installed the priests of Baal in the temple and then arranged his coronation. Following this path, anyone could be made a king.

Saul remains the first king of Israel, following divine appointment, the only legal means to adorn the royal coronation.

    Cheers,

    Jim
