Surnames of famous Christians sometimes reflect their service . George Whitefield is a case-in-point . In his evangelistic endeavors he sought souls most earnestly . His tabernacle was even nick-named " the soul trap " . In his ministry he took to heart that the fields were white unto harvest .

Jonathan Goforth . That godly Canadian missionary to China made it his mission to really go-forth with the gospel .

B.B.Warfield . He was indeed on a major battleground throughout his career . He contended with liberalism of all stripes and met the challenge head-on . This seasoned warior had the German higher critics in his aim as his main adversaries but he tackled the gamut .

Some silly ones -- can be mentioned -- Billy Sunday -- too obvious to elaborate .

    I don't think D.L.Moody was really moody .

A.W. Pink was no pansy in the pulpit or in print .

A.W.Tozer never dozed in his ministrations .

John Flavel wasn't into the latest flavor of the month in his soul-stirring writings .

    H.A.Ironsides was no Cromwell .

John Knox -- numerous knocks did not move him in his devotion to the King of Kings .

    Joseph Irons -- a godly preacher with a God-given constitution .

J.I.Packer -- is noted for condensing his thoughts concisely .

John Piper -- he doesn't play his own tune , rather ,depends on the Lord in his powerful ministry .

Dr. Richard Land of the SBC covers lots of ground in his political analyses.

My last name is Knox. My preaching style in prisons isn't very "soft". I don't give "sugar stick" sermons at all. I am usually "knocking" 'em in the head and heart about obedience, righteousness, evangelism, and duty.

    Oh that is easy!

Back in Middle Ages England a fellow named 'Van' was re-thatching his house which just happened to have a common wall adjacent to his hog pen.

You guessed it! He fell off the roof and landed on his pig!

Since that day...all butchers in that small town in England have been named "Van-landing-ham"!

    In His service;
    Jim

There's a banker in my town named "Moneymaker".

John Gill grew up a farmer and used to grow regular, plain, ordinary potatoes......that's why he became a "commontater". :)

Sorry. I need my rest! Need to sober up.

As I noted in another thread, there's a Pastor Mark Lawless. Now that's a name I wouldn't want as a pastor. The only thing worse I can imagine would be Mark Licentious. ;)

Peter Popoff was exposed as a fake faith healer and went from $4 million per year to bankruptcy. I guess he Popped off his mouth one too many times.

Some non-Christian names I find funny: I have known (really, no kidding) sisters April and Autumn Schauer. I knew of a Crystal Shanda Lear. And PJ's Pancake House in Princeton NJ had the following sign: "Helen Waite is our credit manager. If you want credit, you can go to Helen Waite."

But that's getting too far off-topic, I guess...

When I was ages 7 to 11 (no joke here), the pastor of the church I grew up in, and am a member of today, was Bro. Joseph Hunt.

When I was attending Bible College in Miami, FL almost forty years ago, there was a Baptist church there, whose Pastor was Bro. Immanuel Immanuel.

And as I wanted to learn more about the Bible, I had a Prof., Dr. Richard A. Seymour.

Years ago, there was a woman who worked in the same building as I. I never knew her, but it was hard to take note of her name on her office. There's no reason to believe she has anything to do with ministry, and I suppose I hope she doesn't happen to read this site. But her name was..... Sundae Belcher.

When I was in grade school, there was a boy in my class named Ted Baer.

Also, a man in our church at that time was named Bob Gay. His brother's name was Ben Gay.

    As in "Big Bucks!!"

    "Bula-Bula!!"

    "Douighnuts!!!"

Part of the party who makes more money in ministry and yet doesn't say a thing that will add up to a cent!!!!

    John R. Rice:

Rice is a variant of the Welsh name Rhys which means a hero or a brave man.
