When is a cake more than the sum of it's ingredients?

When it is whipped, beaten and poured into a mold and thrown into a preheated oven. Afterward it comes out delicate and ready to be crowned with sweetness.

When times get tough, we would do well to remember that Jesus will see us through any fire we might face. When we come out of this we will be adorned as His bride and ready to glory in the sweetness of His covering.

Just felt like praising my Lord.

I felt compelled to use this illustration in my sermon this past Sunday morning.

I actually took an egg, flour, baking soda, vanilla flavoring, milk, salt, butter, mixing bowl and a spoon (oven was too big :BangHead: ) and mixed the ingredients together.

Using Matthew 5:1-12, I was able to show that all the ingredients of a Christian's life is always followed up by fire. I laid out all the ingredients on the alter's banister and asked if anyone could identify what the items were and what if mixed, would make. Everyone recognized after only three of the ingredients were introduced. Just as if you were to take any three of The Beatitudes, most everyone will identify you as a Christian.

Once they identified what the ingredients would become, I mixed them together and asked if I now have a cake. Of course the answer was not yet. While living the life of a Christian, you are combining all the ingredients of Christ's recipe for your life (verses 3-11). They will get stirred and mixed with all the events of life that seem to bring hardships, people that will revile and persecute you and speak evil and falsely against you. These times will be hot as an oven at times but remember, it takes an oven to make a cake. All the while rejoicing, for once out of the oven the cake is indeed crowned with sweetness and what is verse 12 if it is not sweet to be in the presence of Our Lord?

    Matthew 5:1-12
1 And seeing the multitudes, he went up into a mountain: and when he was set, his disciples came unto him: 2 And he opened his mouth, and taught them, saying,
3Blessed are the poor in spirit: for theirs is the kingdom of heaven.
4Blessed are they that mourn: for they shall be comforted.
5Blessed are the meek: for they shall inherit the earth.
6Blessed are they which do hunger and thirst after righteousness: for they shall be filled.
7Blessed are the merciful: for they shall obtain mercy.
8Blessed are the pure in heart: for they shall see God.
9Blessed are the peacemakers: for they shall be called the children of God. 10Blessed are they which are persecuted for righteousness’ sake: for theirs is the kingdom of heaven.
11Blessed are ye, when men shall revile you, and persecute you, and shall say all manner of evil against you falsely, for my sake. 12Rejoice, and be exceeding glad: for great is your reward in heaven: for so persecuted they the prophets which were before you.

So, what more can I say then, as we come in contact with our world and it seems that times are rough, "Let Them Eat Cake?"

Did some walk the aisle with plate and fork in hand? (Sorry. I couldn't pass that by.)

By the way, do remember that the woman who first said, "Let them eat cake" also lost her head, literally.

    Cheers,

    Jim

A plate did get passed, as is the way of all good Baptists. As for the other there was no oven and I did not mean for this post to be a joke or joked about. There was a need for this sermon in my congregation and I was hoping that someone here might have needed it as well.
