I don't think you understand the issue for many here - sex is inherently bad except when for procreation within a marriage. No procreation, no redeeming value.

Here is a link to the right's fight against contraception. The same basic principles apply against gays plus all that you already know.

    "Natural" does not mean "good".

It seems to me that somewhere related to the practice of homosexuality there must be same sex desire. Does that count as a lust of the flesh? I would think so and I would think that as we are born in sin it is not unreasonable that some should be born with that predisposition. Still what we do with our 'lusts' is important. Hence:

Aslan, it really doesn't matter to God if homosexuals are "born" that way or not. He didn't say it was a sin to be a homosexual, just that it was sin to practice homosexuality. Just like it's not a sin to be predisposed to alcoholism, but it is a sin to be a drunkard.

Menageriekeeper the debate from the religious right and they have a whole cottage industry promoting...that its learned behaviour(Dobsons big bankroll into it} and what research and science is actually telling us through controlled studies(science) is another thing then the politicalization of right wing groups to demonize real science(just like the stupid bankrolling of the anti-evolution crowd) again based on politics and putting up stupid theories
because it was based on fear not faith.

the point is and I have noticed a slow change that people are not as knee jerk on this issue..as they were knee jerk to it just a matter of years ago...so that is the point of the poll the "practice" part is another debate and poll. I think what I am hearing from you menagerie is agreement that they are born that way...is that correct ...if it is ...that is my point to actually historicaly document the change of views of people who once held another view but science and research is shouting out that the truth has always been with common sense and mercy plus the truth science and research reveals. That can only bring mercy to this minority group because they have no control over how they were born.

Daisy excellent post from the New York Times the person who wrote it gives a really balanced appriasal and seems to be an honest broker...but again another great debate and poll topic. Seems to be some honest concerns but we stil have people who believe(although changing)earth is flat and kneejerked to a black and white world
when in fact it is a the spectrum of colors. Perhaps all partys should be honest like Mr.
    Shorto.

So my poll is narrow to what is transpiring along the lines of evidence that is building and accumulating that gays are really born that way and a lot of waste of money is being put into Dobson like campaigns when all they are is a dry hole and made up science.

Remember just a year ..two years ago you would get major knee jerk responses ..now I see a change. And credit a sovereign God and how he uses science and research to reveal truth.

Just like slavery and interacial relationships this is going in the same way.

Aslan, I've called you on this before.

The Bible never condemnes interracial relationships or slavery.

It does across the canon condemn homosexual behavior.

    Hello Aslanspal,

From the perspective of history in the making, I think you are on to something. There is the beginning of a movement within conservative circles to allow that people are born with a predispostion toward homosexuality. In addition there is an inkling that this is a characteristic in species in general to exhibit the tendancy when populations grow too dense. (Penguins and Rhesus monkeys have made a splach lately) Somehow overcrowding switches a genetic marker that negatively impacts a species population by inducing homosexuality. Or so the theory goes.

However, the acknowledgement that people may be born 'that way' does not mitigate the fact that the activity is still sin. We are all born in a sinful state, we are all fallen, and it doesn't matter so much how we got that way. Is there a genetic component to sin? Perhaps. But there is also the choice component to it as well.

Because a person is born with the predisposition to alcoholism, do they have to become an alcoholic? No. And if they do succumb, can they blame a genetic predisposition when they stand before the judgement seat? No again.

The answer to our condition is the blood of the lamb. And we all need it for one reason or another.

so, if it's 'natural,' how do we convince the preactioners that it's wrong if all we have then is "God said so?"

    You don't. God does.

    Aslan,

I will grant that homosexual behavior may be a part of the sin nature of totally depraved humanity, but no, it is not genetic and there is no such thing as a gay gene. There might be some who are born acting more feminine as we understand femininity in today's culture, but that does not mean they are gay and that they don't have a choice in how to live their lives.

Just because many homosexuals may be naturally that way does not excuse homosexual behavior. Only sexual relations between a married man and woman can be moral. All other sexual relations are sinful.

People make choices of one kind or another every day.

Some have life changing impact. Some don't. All have consequences.

I believe based on scientific evidence that global warming is largely the result of human activity and that people are born with genetic predispositions towards homosexuality.

However, evidence that supports or opposes my beliefs do not end a debate but hopefully I will critically incorporate that evidence into my understanding of an issue. I do not consider the debate on either of these issues to be over.

Additionaly, while I support minimizing human impact on global warming, I also recognize that

    1) it must be weighed against social and economic implications
    2) complete elimination of human contribution towards global warming is impossible
    3) efforts to minimize human contribution to global warming many show little to no results

For homosexuality, I recognize that having a genetic predisposition towards a sexual orientation does not

    1) justify actions related to that orientation
    2) change the wording of scripture I consider to be inspired and authoritative about homosexuality
