Does anyone know if the following was acceptable practice in OT times? I find this disturbing, to say the least :(

Thought this might be the best forum to post this in; if not, I apologize.

6 Lot went outside to meet them and shut the door behind him 7 and said, "No, my friends. Don't do this wicked thing. 8 Look, I have two daughters who have never slept with a man. Let me bring them out to you, and you can do what you like with them. But don't do anything to these men, for they have come under the protection of my roof."

22 While they were enjoying themselves, some of the wicked men of the city surrounded the house. Pounding on the door, they shouted to the old man who owned the house, "Bring out the man who came to your house so we can have sex with him."
23 The owner of the house went outside and said to them, "No, my friends, don't be so vile. Since this man is my guest, don't do this disgraceful thing. 24 Look, here is my virgin daughter, and his concubine. I will bring them out to you now, and you can use them and do to them whatever you wish. But to this man, don't do such a disgraceful thing."
25 But the men would not listen to him. So the man took his concubine and sent her outside to them, and they raped her and abused her throughout the night, and at dawn they let her go.

Maybe acceptable in Sodom. Lot may have been morally desensitized living in that filthy city.

Sounds almost like the country we are living in doesnt it? Millions of abortions a year, Child pornography, sex, adultery, girls gone wild, sex and nudity on prime time TV, Immoral polititions, etc. Its called Total Depravity and what can happen to a believer when he turns his back on God.

    Psalm, what happened to OSAS?

Is this believer who turned their back on God still saved?

Yes---when I saw these, I was really disturbed! You are right, though--not that much different from what is going on in our own country right nowm if you think about it. Even so, come Lord Jesus!

You are referring to two different storied in two different time periods. The first is about Lot in Genesis 19, and the story goes like this:

5 And they called unto Lot, and said unto him, Where are the men which came in to thee this night? bring them out unto us, that we may know them.
6 And Lot went out at the door unto them, and shut the door after him,
7 And said, I pray you, brethren, do not so wickedly.
8 Behold now, I have two daughters which have not known man; let me, I pray you, bring them out unto you, and do ye to them as is good in your eyes: only unto these men do nothing; for therefore came they under the shadow of my roof.
9 And they said, Stand back. And they said again, This one fellow came in to sojourn, and he will needs be a judge: now will we deal worse with thee, than with them. And they pressed sore upon the man, even Lot, and came near to break the door.
10 But the men put forth their hand, and pulled Lot into the house to them, and shut to the door.
11 And they smote the men that were at the door of the house with blindness, both small and great: so that they wearied themselves to find the door.

So Lot's daughters were saved by the angels, and the wicked men were blinded. The sin of homosexuality and sodomy was so great that God destroyed the city with fire and brimstone. The city was so named because of the sin of sodomy.

And yet here is what Peter testifies concerning Lot in 2Peter 2:
    6 And turning the cities of Sodom and Gomorrha into ashes condemned them with an overthrow, making them an ensample unto those that after should live ungodly;
7 And delivered just Lot, vexed with the filthy conversation of the wicked:
8 (For that righteous man dwelling among them, in seeing and hearing, vexed his righteous soul from day to day with their unlawful deeds;)

The Word of God still calls him "just Lot" and "that righteous man." This does give credence to OSAS, but in no way condones his sin or wickedness.

The second story that you allude to takes place in the Book of Judges, chapter 19.
The key verse of the Book of Judges is found in chapter 17:6
6 In those days there was no king in Israel, but every man did that which was right in his own eyes.

The same verse is also the concluding verse of the book (21:25). It gives a picture of lawlessness. There was no government. Wickedness abounded. There was no unity. There came a point where (right or wrong) action had to be taken, so drastic, that it would arouse the attention of the entire nation and bring them together.
When the Levite's concubine was so brutally treated and murdered, the Levite saw that opportunity, and seized upon it. He dissected his wife's corpse and sent a portion of it to each tribal leader throughout Israel. It brought the anticipated outrage that the Levite hoped that it would. All of Israel came together as one nation, something that had not happened for a good many years. It was then that the nation of Israel, as one united nation, took action against the guilty party, though it resulted in loss of life to many.

    Susan WNY,
This situation was explained to me by a now deceased religious leader from the Dead Sea region where Sodom is reputed to have been located. (I was a guest in His home in Israel in the mid '70s, where I was treated better by the males in the household than were his female family members.)

Due to the necessity of providing one's guests safety, especially strangers, while they are under one's roof, it was considered a High crime for one to "give up" their male guests to harm. Females then, as as they remain today, in Arab nations, especially those still practicing tribal traditions, are considered to be property. Hence when a male guest is in your home, you do everything possible to protect that guest even if it means giving up your own female flesh and blood in order to do so. If harm comes to your guest, it is an insult of the highest order, and it is your fault and you are held liable!

Recently enlightening insights from Afganastan highlight similar practices while the Taliban were in power.

    Ron,
A believer can run from God and still be covered in the Blood of Christ. He is always faithful even when we aren't. Like Peter. You notice I said "What can happen to a believer...."

I have slipped into sin but I never stopped trusting in His Blood. I an just a depraved sinner. Arent you?

This is such a disturbing story. A "man of God" willing to give his virgin daughters to be gang raped by a crazy mob. So much for family values.
