    Hey Tater,

Is your friend a JW? Some of the beliefs you described your friend having are something that I've heard JW's hold.

    Sarah,

It is good that you are willing to talk with your friend about these things. It shows me that you value that friendship enough to not just let stuff build that makes you uncomfy until it explodes everywhere. The only other advice I can give you is to be very cautious when speaking to her on this topic as she may feel as strongly for this as you are beginning to feel against it.

    Hope things work out.

    Santa is found in scripture:

"Ho, ho, come forth, and flee from the land of the north" - Zec 2:6

Isn't it amazing how Santa's characteristics matches Jesus Christ's...except Jesus Christ is real and Santa is a lie! (But guess who's behind it?) santa/satan

Granny~ not a JW, but a true-blue Baptist who loves Truth; the kjBible, homeschooling, homebirths, and is completely set free from traditions, including birthdays.

Jesus is NOT the reason for the season, but Christmas is a season looking for a reason!

Sorry, I don't ascribe Santa to Satan. Doing so, even in jest, is giving something to Satan that he hasn't earned.

If you don't want Santa in your home, that's your right. But, just like the issue of the Christmas tree, or celebration of Christmas in general, don't berate those who do.

You said 'Santa is found in scripture'...which was NOT funny. BTW, I haven't berated anyone...just stated some of my thoughts, plus the Truth about santa.

No, they are Baptist. And I think its fine for people to believe what they want, but when they come into my home and tell me I am wrong, that makes me uncomfortable.

I don't blame ya, TaterTot.That's like when someone hollers at me for using a modern Bible. I know right off that person is stuck in at least one false doctrine. And I'd be suspicious of anyone who has nine children in this day and age unless they're extra-wealthy.

Thanks Tater for clearing that up. You mentioned something about them not celebrating holidays and birthdays, etc. and I just thought that was one of the beliefs held by JW's. =o)

There's nothing wrong with having as many kids as you want, howerver you should think about 1)paying for the child's college education 2)Car at 16 or 18 3)All the early clothes they'll grow out of that you'll have to buy like crazy just to keep up.

It's really only creepy *to me anyways* when someone says they had all those children because God told them to... I mean really told them to and they didn't just get it from reading the bible verse refering to being fruitful and multiplying. =o)

If I offended you, please accept my apology. I post that verse every year, and many find it amusing, and testament to the fact that, if not taken in context, you can use scripture to justify just about anything.

You said Santa was a lie. That's not correct. Santa is a legendary fable based on a real person, one of many such legendary fables. If one insists that this is a lie, then we must also say that all of Jesus' parables are a lie, since they're not real either. That thought is ridiculous, and I don't think that's what you intended by your innocent comment.

Here's an interesting concept - are folks who insist on this boycotting of holidays simply feeding their pride and self-righteousness by calling attention to themselves?

Not to mention that it would be a better use of their time and effort to tell someone that the real Jesus loves them and wants them to become God's child, instead of harping on why they don't participate in the holiday.

Just food for thought and a spark for discussion.

As for me, I don't feel any kind of pride or self-righteousness by not doing the holidays & I try not to harp on why I don't participate...shoot, if you only knew the animosity that has come against our family because of our stand!

Check your earlier encyclopedias for the true meaning of Christmas, it was picked up from paganism & God says to learn not the way of the heathen...the Mass of Christ is not a christian celebration & was not instituted by Christ, the apostles, or by Bible authority.

When Johnv added his 'humour' that santa is found in the Bible, it did offend me, as there are many attributes of Jesus Christ that are given to santa. The world hates Jesus...why would they celebrate His birth? Since when does the world care about Him? Oh, maybe shortly after 9/11...God Bless America-yeah right; thousands of babies die daily, and sodomites are running rampant, thanks to a God-less America!

If folks were as eager to have their children believe in Jesus and sound doctrine as much as they put their efforts and approval in having them believe in santa, we could have a Biblical revival! Santa has become a shrine...at least in my neck of the woods.

The manger is empty and Christ was never in Christmas. This is all I have to say & I'm sorry for taking away from the topic of the thread...

P.S. ...Johnv, I wasn't going to respond to your post(bolded above), but after giving it some more thought & prayer, think I will.

You shouldn't compare Jesus' parables to satan's lies! A lie based on a real person is STILL a LIE!!! People don't tell the story about a man who lived a long time ago...they tell their children that a jolly ol' fat man is going all over the world in one night with flying reindeer, climbing down everyone's chimney, delivering presents to good little girls and boys. This is IMPOSSIBLE! ...

Only God can be everywhere at once! God is a jealous God!

I don't. The Santa Clause myth is not a lie. I can discern the difference between a myth and a lie. It's a pity many cannot (not directed at you).
I agree. So long as we don't engage in deifying, this is not an issue.

Yup, it's called childhood imagination. Like the boogie man, the tooth fairy, the imaginary friend, and the dude in the Mickey Mouse costume at Disneyland. We do our children a disservice by squashing on their imaginations. We force them to grow up too fast, and then get upset at them when they have sex at 17 and have $10,000 of credit card debt at 18. But this is a topic for a whole different thread. Let's respectfully agree to disagree, and leave it at that. While I don't agree with you on the Santa issue, I do agree that no one should berate or belittle you simply because you choose not to partake of the seasonal customs. You refraining from them is your sovereign right as a Christian, being convinced so in your own m ind, and I support that, regardless of our difference of opinion. [IMG]

No parent ever tells his child, "Let's PRETEND there is a santa claus."...or "Let's PRETEND there is a tooth fairy." Nope, they tell them there IS a santa, tooth fairy, etc. This lie is taken as TRUTH by the child. Woe unto them that call evil good!

God commands us to raise our children up in the nurture and admonition of the LORD…not their imagination! God says in Genesis 8:21 that the imagination of man's heart is evil from his youth. To teach them the TRUTH is not a disservice...it's obedience to God!

Children fornicate because they have not been taught the TRUTH concerning this sin. Children go into debt because they have not been taught the TRUTH about what God says about debt and usury.

We can still teach our children to be creative children following the guidelines given to us in Philippians 4:8, "Finally, brethren, whatsoever things are true, whatsoever things are honest, whatsoever things are just, whatsoever things are pure, whatsoever things are lovely, whatsoever things are of good report; if there be any virtue, and if there be any praise, think on these things."

My daughters played with their baby dolls(no Barbies) till well into their adolescent years...They married their first and only loves, after courtship. My sons stayed home till marriage and tinkered on motors, hoed cotton, etc. We had a good time without ever having seen Disneyland.

Yes, and so did I. I did not discourage their imaginations in their youth. When they came to me and said something about their imaginary friend, I didn't tell them their imaginary friend wasn't real. This December 6th, we will be putting our shoes out for St Nicholas Day filled with straw, and the next day, the straw will be gone, and the shoes filled with candy.

When my kids grew older, they developed mature and Godly discernment, and cast aside their childhood beliefs. Today, I still ahve one child who's young, but th older children are healthy spiritually and psycologically. Yur verse from Genesis is taken out of context in regards to this topic. The verse from Philippians is well and good, but we must also consider that 1Cor tells us that when we're children, we behave like children, and when we're adults, we act like adults and cast aside our childish ways. To pull a child out of childhood too soon has the potential to be destructive to the child, and in that light, I have no problem with continuting the Santa myth in my home. You have no scriptural authority to tell me what I'm doing is wrong. Of course, how you conducted your home was fine, and I don't have a problem with you either. But you're pretty much telling me that it's your way or it's evil. No disrespect intended, but you don't even think I have a real bible if it's not the KJV. If you err in that, it stands to reason that your comments about kids and healthy proper imaginations are likely in error as well.

I don't see why believing in Santa Claus is wrong for a child. I am a grown woman and still believe in Santa. Now I shall go take cover because I know a ton of bricks is about to come down on me!
