It is silly because we live in land of freedom. I want to protect that. I do not need the gov't sticking their nose in to my life any more than they already do. If someone wants to skip grandma's dinner to go buy a TV then so be it. They have the right to do that and the gov't should not tell them otherwise.

Amen to all that. When I speak of staying away from the crowds, that is my personal preference. My wife jumps right in the middle of the crowd and loves it. I suppose I should get one of the new flat TVs. Tubes are getting harder and harder to find. LOL.

You are speaking of food - that you need to survive.

I'm talking about a 65" TV. Is that needed to survive? How about an iPad for an 8 year old (yes, I know people who are doing this)? Necessity? I think not. Materialistic? Unfortunately, most likely.

    Ann,
Have you seen the commerical where the husband insults his wife all day long, until she finally tells him to sleep on the couch. Then, at the end of the commerical, it becomes apparant that he planned all this so he could watch their new flat, latest technology screen in peace alone.

I don't think a 65" TV or an ipad for a child are materialistic. Is materialistic having things above the level of survival? If that is the standard then every single American is materialistic and 95% of us are TREMENDOUSLY materialistic.

I think materialistic has more to do with the attitude of the heart involving such things. For example, I seem to recall reading in the hurricane threads you speak of owning a boat. Is that being materialistic?

Yes, it's the issue of the heart and when you stand on line to buy that TV or iPad - and skip being with your family on Thanksgiving, THAT is materialistic.

Yes, the boat would be materialistic if it took priority over people. Instead, that puppy is a gonner if it ever became more important than people.

You are making assumptions about people and situations that you are not prepared to make. Sure some of those folks who are standing in line are materialistic. But maybe some of them are not having family get togethers that day. Maybe some do not have any family to get together with. There are a lot of possibilities.

A lot of people would consider owning a boat to be materialistic and not know you at all and again not be prepared to make that assumption. I am sure you would not appreciate someone making that judgement.

Forget materialistic. I think it is safe to say that if someone is willing to sleep outside overnight in a line up to enter a store that person is coveting whatever thingamajig they're planning on buying.

That very well maybe so in some cases, but you are not able to make such a judgment. You are painting with a very broad brush, that I am sure you would not appreciate being used against you.

Maybe they NEED that 65" flatscreen TV for their survival. From the videos I've seen, they absolutely act like it IS a matter of survival.

Why would they consider it materialistic? I didn't give up family time or life time in order to get it. As a matter of fact, it's acquisition was a family vacation - 10 days in Florida sailing it to Fort Lauderdale. It was an investment because 10 years after it's purchase, it's worth $50,000 more than we paid for it. If it sunk in Sandy, no biggie. It's insured and I'd not cry over it.

Surely you realize that a boat is not needed for survival either. It just seems odd to me that you will automatically characterize someone who waits in line for a TV as materialistic. But yet you cannot understand why anyone would consider owning a boat materialistic, and you will make sure we know the reasons why...an investment, family vacation. You do not seem to mind at all judging someone's heart as being materialistic, but you do not like it turned on you.

For the record, I have no reason at all to think of you as materialistic. You seem like a kind, family oriented lady who seeks to honor the Lord.

It's not that difficult to make a judgment. Foregoing sleeping in your own bed to sleeping in a lawn chair in a strange place in order to purchase something is definitely 'to longingly wish for property', the very definition of coveting.

I never gave up family time, never went into debt and our investment is worth more 10 years after purchase than we bought it. I doubt most waiting on lines last night could say that. :)

Thank you. I've just spoken to many who are out there waiting on line. I just don't get the "get bigger, better, more expensive" in my mind. But then again, I'm cheap and too practical. I'm still on a prepaid phone and even though my husband is a computer engineer by training/former trade, we don't have any newfangled things in the house. Yes, we have 4 laptops (only computers that are running right now) but mine is the church's, hubby's is his personal/work computer and my college daughters got theirs for graduation. My 12 year old and 9 year olds want iPod Touches and I laugh. :) They are getting nice things for Christmas but they don't need technology. LOL Like I said, I'm cheap and practical.

    Don't be obtuse.

    Covet:
    1. To wish, long, crave for something (esp. the property of others)
    2. To feel immoderate desire for that which is another's.
    3. to wish for earnestly, to desire (what belongs to another) inordinately

If you can persuade me that people that sleep in a parking lot to acquire something is normal behavior, go for it.

If anyone wants to live their life with an insatiable appetite for a certain gadget to the degree they stand in line, that is their right. I am just not going to live my life that way.

I completely agree. And I think it is wrong for others to judge their motives and automatically label them as materialistic.

Anyone who's been in the Armed Forces would never judge someone for having to stand in a line.
