I love the song "Mary, Did You Know?" And I'm sure she didn't know, at THAT time all the things that He would do when He grew up.

I wish someone would write a song about Judas' mother. She suffered greatly too and it was through no fault of hers that Judas betrayed Jesus - but you know she had to be shunned by certain people...

Is singing hymns that are not 'totally' scriptural any worse than singing songs that ARE 'totally' scriptural and not meaning them?

    Blackbird, this is for you....

Said the night wind to the little lamb,
do you see what I see?
Way up in the sky, little lamb,
do you see what I see?

A star, a star, dancing in the night
With a tail as big as a kite
With a tail as big as a kite

Said the little lamb to the shepherd boy,
do you hear what I hear?
Ringing through the sky, shepherd boy,
do you hear what I hear?

A song, a song, high above the trees
With a voice as big as the sea
With a voice as big as the sea

Said the shepherd boy to the mighty king,
do you know what I know?
In your palace warm, mighty king,
do you know what I know?

A Child, a Child shivers in the cold
Let us bring Him silver and gold
Let us bring Him silver and gold

Said the king to the people everywhere,
    listen to what I say:
    Pray for peace, people everywhere!
    listen to what I say:

The Child, the Child, sleeping in the night
He will bring us goodness and light
He will bring us goodness and light

Actually the there is a line in this song that is totally stupid....It goes:

A Child, a Child shivers in the cold
Let us bring Him silver and gold
Let us bring Him silver and gold

What? And they were supposed to be WISE...Anyone knows that if a child is shivering you give it a blanket.. not precious metals!!!!Not to mention... silver was never mentioned!!! doh!!!

    I know I do. :tear:

I know I cannot sing every word in the hymn Whatever It Takes .

    The line that gets me is Take the dearest things to me, if that's how it must be, to draw me closer to Thee;

I think about my children and grandchildren and I just can't sing it. I need to grow more spiritually I guess. :praying:

Merciful saints, you guys must bored to death to bring up a topic like this one. *Hey, if it keeps them occupied....*

By way of keeping you all busy, in Luke 2:13-14 it merely says, "And suddenly there was with the angel a multitude of the heavenly host praising God and saying, 'Glory to God in the highest, and on earth, peace, goodwill toward men.'" Singing is a form of praising God, eh?

Luke 2:13-14 says, "And suddenly there was with the angel a multitude of the heavenly host praising God and saying, 'Glory to God in the highest, and on earth, peace, goodwill toward men.'"

I thought of these verses also. Singing is a form of praising.

Helen, would you happen to have "Joy to the World" with six verses? I only found the four I'm familiar with. I did, however, find an article stating the verses have also been sung to John Wyeth's tune"Nettleton", commonly sung "Come Thou Fount of Every Blessing".

I've been trying to get that in my head. Anybody else wanna try?

Yuck... the emPHAsis keeps landing on the wrong syLLAble. BTW - the angels didn't sing according to Scripture. They only say or shout. Maybe singing is a blessing only available to us humans?

    The little drummer boy...two reasons:

    1) drum playing is a lousy gift for a newborn
    2) playing the drum is just something this boy wants to do but doesn't know how. The primary role of a drummer is keeping time, in the song, the ox and lamb have to keep time. Obviously, the boy is no drummer at all. He is something like the horrible singer at church that wants to sing solos only for the glory of singing in front of the church...stupid little boy (not a drummer).

On the other hand, I love "Grandma got run over by a reindeer" because my own grandmother is crazy enough that it could happen any Christmas now...

And like others, I don't care for "Do you hear what I hear," it seems to be about something other than Christmas

I really like "Mary, Did You Know?" I like the way Mark Lowery does it best.

"The Little Drummer Boy" is a different story. It is the absolute most annoying song! I'd like to take his drumsticks away and smack him with them.

Come on, stop picking on that poor little drummer boy. He was blessed by God! At least his mommy let him have drums. My mommy absolutely refused--and she never would have let me play them at Christmas.

But for the worst Christmas song of all time, I don't think anyone has mentioned "When a Child Is Born" yet. It is an open invitation to the Antichrist to come! Check it out.

    When A Child Is Born

A ray of hope flickers in the sky
A tiny star lights up way up high
All across the land dawns a brand new morn
This comes to pass when a child is born

A silent wish sails the seven seas
The winds of change whisper in the trees
And the walls of doubt crumble tossed and torn
This comes to pass, when a child is born

A rosy hue settles all around
You got the feel, you're on solid ground
For a spell or two no one seems forlorn
This comes to pass, when a child is born

Spoken: And all of this happens, because the world is waiting.
Waiting for one child; Black-white-yellow, no one knows...
but a child that will grow up and turn tears to laughter,
hate to love, war to peace and everyone to everyone's neighbor,
and misery and suffering will be words to be forgotten forever.

It's all a dream and illusion now,
It must come true sometime soon somehow,
All across the land dawns a brand new morn,
This comes to pass when a child is born.

Why don't mommies trust little boys?? And I told Mommy I'd even pay for those bongo drums my own self! [IMG]
A number of secular artists have recorded it on Christmas albums, with the big hit being by Johnny Mathis in 1976, I bellieve. The trouble is, the music is very conservative with a very nice melody. Patty and I try to never buy a CD with the song on it, but I'm sure a lot of careless Christians listen to it at home or on the radio (or even at church??).

I don't think there's anything wrong with "Mary Did You Know?"

I love Christmas music. It always puts me in a good mood no matter what. Whether it be the message behind the songs, or just the beat, I can always crank it up and feel better for at least a few more minutes.

I don't think anyone who doesn't like the song is really listening to what the words are saying...

    Mary did you know
    That your baby boy
will one day walk on water

How the heck would Mary foreknow what Jesus would do as an adult? She wasn't psychic.

    Mary did you know
    That your baby boy
Will save our sons and daughters

Ok if you guys are right, sure, she'd know that Jesus had come to save the world from our sins. But then again, she was a simple Jewish, young girl. Maybe 12 or 13. Does anyone really think she knew it all?

    Did you know
    That your baby boy
will one day make you new
    This sleeping child you're holding
    Will soon deliver you

    Mary did you know
    That your baby boy
Will give sight to a blind man
    Did you know
    That your baby boy
Will calm the storms with his hands
    Did you know
    That your baby boy
    Has walked where angels trod
And when you kissed the little baby
You've kissed the face of God...

I'll stop here. Really...how would she know about Jesus walking on water, curing the blind man, when she wasn't even there to witness it. Sure, I think she had a clue after the Angel came to her to tell her what was up, and even after she witnessed his miracles, but really. I think this song is saying at the time that she's found out that she'll be having the Son of God what she is in for. What's going to happen. How the world will really change. How significant you are at this moment. (I use the term significant loosely, I'm not Catholic lol...)

Anyway, it's a nice song. I love it. Only song I hate is the stupid Rudolph and Frosty the Snowman songs. blech.

:wavey:Nice to meet you all by the way. I haven't properly introduced myself yet. Will do in the intro thread.

Might it not be impossible to write a biblically-accurate hymn about the mother of Judas? As far as I know, the bible makes no reference whatsoever to his parents, though in the New Testament apocryphal book, called "The First Book of the Infancy of Christ", chapter 14 recounts the following mythical story:

1 Another woman likewise lived there, whose son was possessed by Satan.
2 This boy, named Judas, as often as Satan seized him, was inclined to bite all that were present; and if he found no one else near him, he would bite his own hands and other parts.
3 But the mother of this miserable boy, hearing of St. Mary and her son Jesus, arose presently, and taking her son in her arms, brought him to the Lady Mary.
4 In the meantime, James and Joses had taken away the infant, the Lord Jesus, to play at a proper season with other children and when they went forth, they sat down and the Lord Jesus with them.
5 Then Judas, who was possessed, came and sat down at the right hand of Jesus.
6 When Satan was acting upon him as usual, he went about to bite the Lord Jesus.
7 And because he could not do it, he struck Jesus on the right side, so that he cried out.
8 And in the same moment Satan went out of the boy, and ran away like a mad dog.
9 This same boy who struck Jesus, and out of whom Satan went in the form of a dog, was Judas Iscariot, who betrayed him to the Jews.
10 And that same side, on which Judas struck him, the Jews pierced with a spear.

But of course that passage is not part of the bible.

Regarding singing hymns that are not 'totally' scriptural, as compared with singing are, but not meaning them, I heartily agree. The only exception would be if someone sang and meant something that went against scripture on an aspect of Christianity that is part of "the root of the matter. Suppose one were to sing and mean the words of Sydney Carter's "Every Star shall Sing a Carol":

COLOR="Indigo"]Every star shall sing a carol,
    Every creature high or low.
Come and praise the King of Heaven
By whatever name you know. [/COLOR]

    Every blessing,

The "whatever name you know" part is just wrong, of course. However, I just remembered something about the stars singing. The Bible does have a poetic reference to that: "Where wast thou...when the morning stars sang together, and all the sons of God shouted for joy? (Job 38:4, 7).
