But he would still be referred to as the brother of Jesus, just as today step brothers and half brothers are generally referred to as "brothers."
If that be true why do some of the greatest Bible scholars of all time consider Mary perpetually virgin? Men like Augustine, Jerome and Martin Luther all stridently declare her perpetual virginity. Do you think they ignored the teachings of scripture, or could it be they had sufficient insight to realize the Bible really points to this conclusion?

I would really like someone to answer this, and not by just saying they go by the Bible rather than what Jerome thinks about it. Why would Jerome et al., all of whom knew the Bible better than any of us, come down on the side of perpetual virginity? What insight do modern scholars have that evaded these men, and continues to evade faithful scholars of the nonevangelical persuasion?

It's apparent that these men had many views contrary to Scripture (infant baptism saves, babies being born guilty, etc.), so yes, I do believe they ignored the clear teachings of Scripture on this matter too.

There are also cultural issues at play. No doubt we today ignore the "clear" teaching of Scripture because the bias in our society is so great.

And there are many faithful who would disagree with these particular stances.

Luther and Augustine were two of the most reliable and influential theologians in history. The Church, yes, the evangelical Church, should recognize the gravity of their work in the light of their context, being informed by their strengths and understanding their weaknesses.
