Washington: Presumptive Republican Presidential nominee John McCain poses a stiff challenge to either of his potential Democratic opponents Barack Obama or Hillary Clinton in the November election, according to a new poll. The Vietnam war veteran is viewed favourably by 61 per cent of all registered voters, including a plurality of Democrats, the Los Angeles Times/Bloomberg poll found. In head-to-head contests, McCain led Clinton by 6 percentage points (46 per cent to 40 per cent) and Obama by two points (44 per cent to 42 per cent).

Until about two weeks after the completion of the major party conventions there is really no use in looking at general election presidential polls. Each candidate will receive a bump up in the polls during their respective party conventions and then they will settle back down. Only then will we know where the general election race stands - around September 15.
