Edward Bernays’ “Propaganda,” is a brilliant introduction to the study of how people can be maneuvered into making what they think is their own choice. Beanays showed how to steer people toward the choices you want them to make, all the while making them think they have complete control over their own actions!

Bernays defines propaganda: modern propaganda is a consistent, enduring effort to create or shape events to influence the relations of the public to an enterprise, idea or group. He goes on to talk about how society consents to have its choices narrowed to ideas and objects brought to it's attention through propaganda of all kinds. Bernays further states that it might be better for us to have committees of so called wise or elite men who would choose our rulers, dictate our conduct, private and public, and decide upon the best types of clothes for us to wear and the best kinds of food for us to eat. That sounds like what our government wants to do to us! He talks about how our invisible governors, who understand the mental processes of the masses, and it is they who pull the wires which control the public's mind. Bernays says that the purpose of his book is to explain the structure of the mechanism which controls the public mind and to tell how it is manipulated by the elite who seek to create public acceptance for a particular idea or commodity.
