Yesterday I got all excited about a good price on a SD memory card for my camera. It is a 2 gig card and it only cost me £13.99/$20.00.

Imagine my excitement when it arrived this morning! I love the 21st Century postal service!

Anyway, I promptly put the card in my camera and found that the 5megapixel setting it would take some 1400 pictures.

Then it hit me - when do I ever have the need to keep 1400 pictures on my camera????

Normally after about 30-40 MAX I download them otherwise organising them becomes a nightmare!

Have we become so sold on "MORE MEMORY" that some of us, (read me) have not really considered whether we need what we have?

I've always needed more and more for my pocket pc and always bought just what I could afford (take that as the cheapest upgrade possible which was the smallest increase usually).

I now have a number of cards

I gave four of my grandkids pocket pcs - old ones - and had enough CF cards to equip them all

As to cameras, if I ever go anywhere I might use the big cards since my little digital does video as well. However YOU ARE RIGHT we won't EVER use all that memory, but we GOT it JUST IN CASE

    possibility

    Travelling

A lot of countries you might not feel safe with the development process - because some countries actually require that you leave the card behind.

    Wedding

You telling me you would only take 30-40 pics at yer kids wedding?

    Major Trips

Local amusement parks can provide lots of pictorial opportunities - I wish I had had a camera when that pigeon let loose on that girl's head

but yeah 1400 pictures is a lot you probably only needed 200-300

    Good points sularis.

30-40 should be plenty for any wedding? One of the groom, one of the bride, one of them together. One of each of the families, bride and groom.

    :) 10-15 should do.

But, I have to say, too much is ALWAYS better than not enough.

With memory, more is always better, and at today's prices, it doesn't make sense not to get the big cards.

The drawback, as noted, is that the huge cards take more download and review time. The advantage is that you can happily leave your photos on the card for extended periods, just in case you mess up a transfer or accidentally trash a photo.

In addition, you can use the cards to put any number of things on - photos, word processing documents, etc. - to carry around to transfer to another computer. Not as good as a hefty USB drive, but it will work in a pinch.

(I realized that flash memory has truly become a commodity when I saw 64-meg USB drives for $5.99 at Staples right next to the two-for-a-dollar pens.)

Hey, MNW, I have just the size you need a 512 MB, you send me your 2 gig card, and I'll send you mine!!

I need a bigger one for my pocket pc, but I am too cheap to spend money on it...

Do you have a link for the $20 card?
That is a bargain. I thought I got a bargain when I got my 512 mb card at walmart for $12!

Of course anyone can send me their old cards... I'll put them to good use!

Ecost.com and geeks.com both have cheap cards if you sign up for their ads and keep an eye out. Just picked up a 2 gig sd for 25. recently.
