    Voters in the US state of Minnesota may find a self-proclaimed vampire on the ballot for the office this year.

    Jonathan 'The Impaler' Sharkey says he plans to announce his bid for governor today on the ticket of the Vampyres, Witches and Pagans Party.

    "Politics is a cut-throat business," he said.

    Eight years ago, Minnesota elected a former professional wrestler, Jesse 'The Body' Ventura, as its governor.

    "I'm a Satanist who doesn't hate Jesus," Mr Sharkey said.

    "I just hate God, the Father."

    The night it was posted a few years back, I was deluged with email from vampyres at a club in Pittsburgh where the DJ had posted the link to club members via email.

    I get email from them fairly often. Most are not Satanists. Many of them are atheists. Of course, some Satanists are atheistis and just see Satan as a symbol of being your own god (this was Anton La Vey's view and is the most common one among younger people today).

    I would hope Minn. isn't so depraved as to elect him. I wonder how many votes he will get though. Alot of people think it's a joke! Did you see the video? The guy interviewing Sharkey the vampyre laughed and joked the whole time.
    The whole thing is sickening.

    This is very true. There used to be a significant number of goths/vampyres down in Tampa. Saturday Night Live even had a skit called "Goth Talk" with Molly Shannon and Chris Kattan that was being filmed from their basement in Tampa, FL. My experiences with them left me with the impression that they were very intelligent, albeit somewhat misguided. They mostly congregated around one club in Ybor City.

    I recall hearing his daughter (I think her name was Zena or something like that) making the claim that they were actually athiests. The question is whether or not it is possible to invoke his name in this manner without reaping the consequences. Perhaps we should take this discussion to another thread?

    I did some research into the subculture last halloween because it came up in my classroom. Not a wholesome lifestyle -- even aside from not knowing Jesus.
