With all the talk about sports stars, movie personalities, musicians, soldiers, etc, many are throwing around the word "hero" loosely.

Wonder who YOU (among our "Baptist figures" 1900-2000) would you consider to be a real hero. I know I said living, but you get what I mean; they may have died in the past few decades, but in this modern era.

George W. Truett -- he stood up to J. Frank Norris and would not let him destroy Texas Baptist life. He was also an amazing example of humility, honesty, faithfulness and courage.

T.B. Maston -- he stood up to racism and showed Southern Baptists how to overcome their prejudice by his example.

James Dunn -- stands for religious liberty with the Baptist Joint Committee on Public Affairs.

William Hendricks -- for most of his ministry, taught the importance of the arts and the need to for a theology of children. He was a wonderful human being and an inspiration.

W.R. Estep -- a brilliant student of history that did groundbreaking work in Anabaptist history. Personally, he was a very humble and caring man who was a constant source of encouragement to me until his death a few years ago. In particular, he helped me through one of the most difficult times in my life with his counsel and assistance.

Russell Dilday -- stood up to the latest version of fundamentalism and made them do publicly what they desperately wanted to do privately (it revealed to the entire SBC the methods and attitudes of the "conservative resurgence")

I'm reading John Lewis' autobiography right now. I think he and Martin Luther King, Jr. are both two amazingly courageous heroes fo baptist life.

Interesting list, TomVols. I am glad you included David Dockery, the President of Union University. But I am surprised that you would put Richard Jackson on your list. If that is the Richard Jackson who wanted to be SBC president during the eighties, didn't he get cozy with the moderate wing of the SBC as time went by???!!!?

Dr. Jackson was offered as a candidate by the Mod wing. He is an avowed inerrantist, as I recall. He is not mod, but falls into the "I disdain politics" category. I believe the mods used him for that reason. Randall Lolley and James Dunn did him in.

Richard Jackson is winsome, warm, and has an evangelistic zeal that needs to be caught by more baptist preachers. His willingness to preach the gospel anywhere and work with anyone is admirable, but his failure to adequately repudiate extremist activities and comments by the mods probably cost him the presidency.

Besides, it is my experience that we conservatives are much more appreciative of the positive contributions made by mods/libs than vice versa. I feel bad that I didn't put Wayne Oates, Wayne Ward and James Blevins on my list, as I appreciate these men quite a bit.
