It was in Gods plan that Jesus should die - His death was an act of God for our benefit, this was an unique occurence, and anyway - He is not dead now - when someone is murdered they stay dead. I am not being sarcastic, although on reading this over it sounds so, I am only trying to explain what I believe, so please excuse the apparent tone of the start of this post [IMG]

In our finite minds we tend to confuse the realm of God's sovereignty, and the realm of human responsibility. Whilst God may very well know and be in control of all events, we are not privy to that knowledge. The knowledge to which we are not only privy, but have distinct responsibility, is to care about and watch over our fellow sojourners on earth. For this reason we preach the open gospel, and for this reason we care for the downtrodden and homeless.

It is one thing to study theology, from which we may benefit greatly, but how we apply that theology in the streets may be another lesson. If we had ten Bibles, we cannot compartmentalize God, and we certainly cannot ascertain with certainty the mind and will of God in all things. This is evidenced by how much theological thinking has changed down through the years.

This dual understanding, the divine realm and the human realm, accounts for some Calvinists being accused of not being Calvinists. Spurgeon has been such a victim. The accusers fail to appreciate the place of the gospel in our ministry, and if it appears to contradict our understanding of the sovereign will of God, so beit. I shall preach the gospel in all earnestness, as if it all depends on man to choose. I will convince a man by all means that he will "believe" in the Lord of the cross. This puts foundation to the saying: I work as if it all depends on me, and pray, knowing it all depends on Him.

    Cheers,

    Jim

A wonderful book on God's sovereignty and the suffering of man is, "When God Weeps," by Joni Erickson Tada.
