    Joseph,

Unless you can get a majority of the U.S. Congress to go along with you, then your tax money goes to the United Nations whether you believe in it or have any trust for it, or not.

That much, Ken, I will concede. I will continue to make the case and try to get others to make that case as well. There is strength in number in a democracy.

Continue to make your case, brother. And I will continue to make the opposite case.

That's one of the things that is so great about our constitutional republic - we can take our cases to others and they and we can then attempt to influence our elected office holders in Washington. [IMG]

Democracy is a great thing, isn't it? I still haven't figured out, however, why you want us to continue funding an evil organization like the UN. :D ;)

It's the influence exerted by the Foreign Affairs cup sitting on my desk at the office. I think it sends out an harmonic that is reforming my thinking to the CFR way. [IMG]

Problem is, we don't live in a Democracy, we live in a Republic.

A Republic is a form of democracy whether you wish to acknowledge it or not. You are wrong.

Republic = any country in which the office of Head of State is not hereditary. The US is a republic and so are most of it's current rivals and enemies.

Democracy = any country ruled by it's citizens, either directly or indirectly. The US is an indirect (representative) democracy, so is The Netherlands. That country however is currently not a republic, it's a monarchy.

Constitution = the legal foundation of many countries that guarantees them and their inhabitents a form of long term stability.

As for the UN headquarters, that article' suggestion of moving it to Montreal sounded sensible.
Another good alternative would be Switzerland.
Ideas of moving it to Iraq mostly show that people should start reading the Bible again instead of Left Behind.

The UN would be a liability to the host country no matter where it is moved. They need constant military security plus there are so many spies and secret agents there that the UN is an intelligence problem for whatever country they meet in. The UN has never lived up to expectations and they are unable to lift a finger against Islamofascism.

The answer is to scale back the role of the UN and to foster nationalism as the best protection against Islamofascism in my opinion.

Nationalism brings problems of it's own, a 'nice' recent examples being the desintegration of Yugoslavia.
A number of conflicts that we usually see as Islam vs. everybody else also have a strong nationalist component (India vs. Pakistan, Russia's southern border, Israel vs. the Palestinians).

That will ofcourse be the problem of the country that says yes when offered the position of host. I suspect there are plenty of countries out there that would say yes.

I am surprised that anyone would want the UN. Think of the expense of protecting foreign nationals who attend.

We agree that the UN is in dire need of reform. However, the best thing for the Netherlands would be a renewed nationalism and a reliance upon self and international friends for security and not a reliance upon the UN for security. It means something to be Dutch, and it is something good.

Didn't we go into Iraq to enforce a UN mandate?

Wow: Ken and I agree on something??!!

Wow, that is a sobering thought, isn't it? Kinda gives a new perspective on "Mystery, Babylon," doesn't it? After all, Saddam rebuilt Babylon, sort of.

    Regards to all of you,
BiR (actually in Richmond this week)

</font>[/QUOTE]Good question, BiR. I wonder why the UN did not support this enforcement. Do you think it might have had anything to do with oil for food?

Well, in NY, the CIA can at least keep an eye on them.

Without American financial support, they would become largely irellevant and probably fold.

Long time, no see! How have you been?

I have always heard that the international diplomatic corps liked NYC because everything in the world was sold there and they could send it home duty free. Of course, if it were in Canada as Mioque posted to start this thread, some of them could have a same-sex marriage without having to travel to Spain, Belgium, or the Netherlands.

The UN does not force anyone to join or pay dues. It is your elected representatives that voluntarily stay in the UN, presumably because it represents the interests of their constituents. While some within the United States would rather this not be the case, until this becomes a majority opinion that your elected representives consider important enough to vote on in Congress, US participation in the UN and payment of dues is the voluntary choice of the United States.

As for the UN moving its headquarters, I see needing more space as a valid reason to do so and the Montreal solution to be an interesting one to consider.

I do not consider the fact that the current UN headquarters happens to be on valuable land to be a valid reason to justify the costs, in finances, time and energy to move its headquarters.
