"..Jesus answered and said unto him, Art thou a master of Israel, and knowest not these things?", John 3:10.

"Jesus answered and said unto him,(Nicodemus, the rabbi), Verily, verily, I say unto thee, Except a man be born again he cannot see the kingdom of God." John 3:3.

Was Nicodemus not yet a "RRD"? (Right, Reverend, Doctor)

Beware: the wolves dressed like sheep.

Take the DD monies and give it to the poor--then go preach the gospel-- to the Ethiopians.

The issue of honorary doctorates is sticky because, now, everyone who has a doctoral degree and is IFB is presumed to be the recipient of an honorary doctorate. I'd also like to add that everyone knows that the word 'doctor' as prefixed before an IFB preacher's name has nothing to do with education, but rather knowledge, work in the ministry, politics, etc.

    Hi Bart,

The independent Baptist Fundamental folk I'm familiar with are: BJU, NBBC, DBTS, CBTS, MBBC, etc.

These groups are trying to pass themselves off as more moderate than some of their brethren.

Their positions are hypocritical and prideful.

    They say:

We are not KJVO, but we only use the KJV in the pulpit and for teaching. Other versions are ok for personal study!

We are separated from the world, but we honor each other with phony degrees and call each other doctor.

These are only two of the hundreds of inconsistent positions that they take.

Having experienced these folks up close and personal, you are right, I have them in my sites!

"Doctor" and "Reverend" are respect of persons appellations which are contrary to New Testament teaching.

Reverend is a word reserved for God. It means that which is awesome. God, only, is so described.
Titles tend to create pride, power and peons-- which breeds Nicolaitians, the deeds of whom Jesus hates.

    Selah,

    Bro. James

"Reverend is a word reserved for God."

Interesting, the Hebrew word used in 300+ times in the Old Testament is translated as follows:
fear 188, afraid 78, terrible 23, terrible thing 6, dreadful 5, reverence 3, fearful 2, terrible acts 1, misc 8 and only related to God directly twice, a quick snoop.

Not sure how you can say it is a word reserved for God.

Oops, I forgot. God used Shakespearean English when he wrote the Old Testament. Silly me.

I think your point was that Ex didn't know what he was talking about, since the KJV used it only once. That's because even the KJV translators knew that yaw-ray means afraid, to be afraid. Therefore, it is used alot in the KJV, it just isnt' translated "reverend."

I think you are just having fun. If not, even God can't help you.

Now that we are Hebrew scholars--where did we get authorization from God to stand in awe of men?

Was this not one of the many shortcomings of the Scribes and Pharisees?

In Christ, there is neither Jew nor Greek, male nor female, bond nor free--whence cometh the titles and respect of persons? (the flesh)

    Now what?

This is more about: "Your eminence","Your Most Holy Highness", etc. etc. in the hallowed halls of the religions of the world--and other places where "status quo" is in control.

We call the president of our country(USA): Mr. President.

My primary care physician I call Maam or Carolyn--she is an excellent GP.

I called some of my doctors by their first names, too.

What blows my mind is the independent fundamental Baptist who claims to be separated from the world and then walks around in awe of his pastor who calls himself Dr. Jones, even though he didn't earn that right.

We can't call our pastors, "reverend," but we sure don't have any problem calling them by the phony title, "doctor."

These are the men on the board of the Fundamental Baptist Fellowship International.

Some of these guys I know. Some have an earned Ph.D. from BJU.

But does anyone seriously believe that all of these guys have earned doctorates. When these men flaunt their honorary doctorates in mass like at the FBFI site, are they not playing into the "pride of life" syndrome. What's so bad about being a humble pastor?

We aren't supposed to call our pastors "reverend," but we can call these guys "doctor." Please.

If you know where these men have their degrees from, please fill in the information.

Seems it would be good, if this is so wrong that someone start sending some letters to the "erring" brethren and confront them with their error.

I would think if credible evidence were given to them, that some of them might change their ways.

Drs. Horn and Minnick have earned Ph.D.'s from BJU. Youstra has his doctorate from Eastern Michigan, I recall. Most, if not all, of the others are honorary. Many of the honorary doctorates are from BJU. There are a few that I do not know for certain.

However, I will stipulate that the honorary degrees are mostly D.D’s, which are solely honorary. Do you know of any real school awarding an earned D.D.? This recognizes achievement in the ministry and is not intended to indicate academic achievement or educational attainment. It is rather like the plaque you hang on your wall for 20 years of faithful and successful ministry. This is an acceptable practice that is recognized even by secular academia.

My gripe is not with the non-academic, purely honorary D.D.’s but I am opposed to the use of bogus degree mill diplomas as if they were real academic degrees. Of course, it is wrong to use an honorary award as if it were an academic credential. Also, I will agree that many men use their honorary titles pridefully and wrongfully. One can even be gauche in flaunting a legitimately earned degree. Pride is a wicked vice that sneaks up on many.

Sho nuff! Check out the following web site for one of the degree mills where Jack "earned" a doctorate:

    http://www.christianbiblecollege.org/testimonies.htm

This college is housed in a small office suite of two rooms in Rocky Mount, NC. Cecil Johnson has really made hay in promoting his school on Jack's coat tails. He also claims that CBC gave an honorary doctorate to D. James Kennedy, who has a legitimate doctorate from Univ. of London. The people at Kennedy's ministry deny any connection such as Dr. Kennedy accepting the degree, etc. What I can read from between the lines is that Cecil said, "We're going to give James Kennedy an honorary doctorate," and he wrote him a letter. We don't know whether Kennedy accepted or not. BTW, this is the guy who offered me a doctorate in anything I wanted if I would write his Ph.D. program in psychology. I declined.
