I agree with Bill in princapl - killing in self-defense is not murder, but we are talking about abortion - Bill, give me an example where self-defense would come into play with abortion?

I wouldn't use the term "self-defense" because that connotates an innately hostile act.

An ectopic pregnancy will threaten (and take) the mother's life if not treated. And long-term, the child cannot survive. So an abortion there is in order.

But you'd be hard pressed to come up with another scenario.

So it's ok to kill the baby because he/she will die anyway? Nonsense.

So, you vote to let a mother die from ectopic pregnancy...in which case the baby dies as well?

Medically irresponsible. Either the mom lives, or both die.

Sorry, that's just not true. Prior to 1972, there was a patchwork of state laws regarding abortion. Some states had very conservative abortion laws and others, very liberal. In fact, this is one of the key arguments against R v W --- the federal government overstepped it bounds and that this issue should be returned to the states. However in pre-1972 America, abortion was not considered a crime.

The point is, by not having an abortion you are in effect killing the mother. So the question simply becomes -- do you want to have one death or two?

In the example you responded to, an etoptic pregnancy, both will die if nothing is done. So, if what I believe you are suggesting is true you are then guilty of two murders.

In a case where a choice must be made, save the mother at the expense of the baby's life or letting both die ... what is your choice? Please do not opt out with the same response you made above. If it were your wife would you let her and the baby die?

I believe there is a sovereign God in heaven. That's my answer. I can't imagine telling a doctor to kill my baby, even if it was to save my wife.

My wife and I talked about this. We came to the same conclusion.

    Well....that's your choice. Double funerals.

Sad, but as long as it's your choice.

I was in my 30's in 1972 and everywhere I knew of in America, it was a crime.

If you read the article you posted from EWTN, you will see that it was not everywhere -- specifically California, New York and some other states. In other words, it was left up to the states.

My friend, I had been in the service in New York State (1960's), been in college, been through many states from New England, Louisiana (deep south) to California.

EVERYWHERE I had been, not only was it a crime, but a heinous crime.

    Shameful and despicable.

More proof that people give lip service to a belief in the sovereignty of God.

More proof that some people are quite comfortable climbing up on Mt. Pious and declaring themselves better than others.
