    Hi,

I'm enrolled in an online class where I have to write and deliver several sermons and get feedback from people. I would like to get some more feedback from strangers (so I could get some honest insights).

If you are interested, please listen to the audio file below (you can stream it from the website) and then post a reply of what you thought of the sermon, constructive criticism, etc.

Welcome to the board why1942. I noticed in your profile that you are non-denominational. Please note that you are posting in a Baptist Only Forum. There is a section for those that are not Baptists to post. Please post in those forums. Thank you.

I also noticed that in your profile you say you do not attend church. Am I reading that right? Would you care to explain yourself?

When I was in seminary there were a good number of "preacher boys" who did not attend a local church. I always floored me. Many said they couldn't find a church where they felt comfortable or wanted. And, these guys were supposed go out and lead churches in the future? I guess they were simply waiting to go out and straighten some poor church out when they graduated. God help the churches who called these yoyo's. I never understood that kind of mentality.

    Reply to All Responses...

I decided to post a reply to all responses thus far. I am only doing so because there were some specific questions asked of me and members were asking me to respond.

Don't have a "home church". I don't even agree that there is biblical support for the title of pastor. Rather, the bible shows a plurality of elders (not paid clergy).

Also, I never said I want to preach. My post said that I'm enrolled in a class that requires I write and deliver several sermons. It is a course requirement and this was the only course available to take.

I would be happy to, but from the response I have received, I would venture a guess that I'm not really welcome here on the board.

I have to tell you, this first response from Salty really shocked me. To answer the question, yes, I have read this. And I thought I was posting in the correct place, as I was trying to get responses from Baptists - their opinion. Guess I was wrong.

All I can say is, "wow". But thanks for setting me straight.

Yes, that is correct. Not only do I not "attend" church, but I would discount much if not most of the modern expression of the church organization as a fabrication of man and not biblical. I do think we need to remain in fellowship with other believers, but I don't see in the bible where this in any way indicates a separate building with paid clergy. The biblical example we have is a community of believers "from house to house".

Again, I think everyone is assuming that I'm studying to be some sort of preacher or pastor of a modern church. This is not the case.

At any rate, it is pretty obvious that this forum is not for me. I made a request and received several responses, yet not one person actually commented on the sermon I posted. Thanks for the help. I think the feedback I have received thus far explains pretty clearly why I am no longer a Baptist. ;-)

First, I think it would have been helpful if you had mentioned that you were not planning to go into the full time ministry. Did we assume - Yes - was that assumption reasonable - YES.

When it comes to pastor/plurality of elders, I think you would be surprised at how many on the board are of that thinking. I would mention one thing - some churches are small and may not have more than one elder - and the title of pastor is a very acceptable term.

Rule # 1 actually sounds very self-explanatory to me

Welcome Forum - As a salesman, I try to introduce myself and allow my client to be comfortable with me before the actual sales pitch. I realize this is not a perfect analogy, but I trust you get the point.
Yes, please do so, there is still time to introduce your self!

Paid pastors - I have started a thread in the Poll thread - click here - please vote

Why1943 why are you taking courses? It seems as if you already have it all figured out. After all, most of us here serve and attend modern churches which you reject. So, you are right. Most of us are here to fellowship and to learn from each other (Iron Sharpens Iron) and it is obvious that you really aren't interested in learning or fellowship.

I listened to your sermon. The delivery was boring and monotone. It was a good "sleeping" sermon.

I hope this gets to you before you leave. I think you may have misunderstood the answers that have been given, insofar as they respect the Baptist Board itself. I hope you don't decide it is not for you.

Let me explain in more detail (not too much - I am prone to using ten words when 5 would do :) ).

The Baptist Board has over 30 forums on it. About a third of them are "Baptist Only", not because of any nastiness, or desire for exclusivity, but to provide the facility for baptists to discuss/debate things with other baptists.

The remaining two thirds of forums onthe Baptist Board are open to Christians of all denominations and none. That is why, if you look at the public profiles of members, you will find several who are not baptists. But the "all denominations" foums are frequented by baptists as well, so if you had posted your message on one of them, you still would have got your "responses from Baptists - their opinion".

    You are welcome here!

But how were the points? If you didn't like the delivery of the information, what is the evaluation of the information itself?

I have realised since my previous reply that there seems to be something amiss with the first posting rule, which says (my emphasis):
We offer a wide range of forums. Most are for BAPTISTS only, to post opinions, views, beliefs and ideas. We also have a few forums for BAPTISTS and all other CHRISTIANS, with pertinent topics that relate to everyone.
Perhaps that rule was written when most of the forums were for Baptists only - I'm just guessing. Now though, the only forums which are "Baptist Only" are:
    4 Baptist Debate forums

    4 Baptist Fellowship forums

    3 "private" forums

    That's a total of 11.
The "All Christians" forums on the BB are:
    5 Christian Debate forums

    16 Christian Fellowship forums

    That's 21 altogether
With a total of 32 Forums, 11 can hardly be called "most", and 21 is not "a few". (I have not included the Archives or the Announcements). Perhaps the first rule needs re-wording, to reflect the actual situation.....or have I got something wrong here?

Why don't you critique his sermon yourself rather than critiquing my critique?

I'm not critiquing your critique, Matt. I'm just asking if maybe the points were good, but not the delivery?

I'll download and listen myself here in a minute, but I am wondering if you "like the message but not the delivery" or if it is all bad (like Jaws 4)?

I mean, who would you rather read the Gettysburg Address? Adrian Rogers or Ben Stein?

Edit: OK. I'm listening. If Why1942 returns to this forum, I'll say what I think. Or maybe a Mod. needs to move this to a different forum so as to fall in line with the baptist-only forum rules.
