Well, guys Friday night marked a new "career" for me. In quotes because it is very part time and I haven't quit any other jobs, but I started doing play-by-play for our local radio station for high school football. In our opener, Chariton (my team) defeated Winterset (John Wayne's birthplace) 29-7, heard exclusively on KELR, 105.3 in South Central Iowa. :D

    Mark,
I, too, was a sports announcer; when in my late 20's and early thirtys; had a blast and would do it again in a heartbeat. Have a good time and enjoy it.

Have FUN, WG!(I useta to announce local boxing.)

Rule #1...make sure you have the correct rosters of both teams & that the #s match the players. (Have fun on a muddy field!)

Rule #2 of PBP announcing...BE SURE you have the PRONUNCIATIONS RIGHT, TO SAVE MAJOR EMBARRASSMENT!

Sometimes, they aren't obvious. In Lawrence Co. OH we have Pedro, pronounced PEA-dro, and about 35 miles away is Rio Grande College, pronounced "RYE-oh".

And remember baseball pitcher Eric Show, pronounced "sh-OWWW"(rhymes w/"allow") or Jim Beauchamp, pronounced "BEECH-mp"?

I figure you've got a fair number of Indian names in Iowa, which can be a mouthful for an English speaker.

    Congratulations, Mark!!

My high school history teacher used to announce the football games. One time he made the mistake of saying the ball was spotted at the 51 yard line. They teased him about it for a long time. Not trying to put any pressure on you, Mark. Just have fun cheering for those Chargers!! [IMG]

I cheated and looked it up on the school website. [IMG] Speaking of the website, whoever is in charge of updating it needs to clear out last year's schedule/results and replace it with this year's info. They must have had a good team last year. The wesite says they were 10-1!

The website server is locked/froze something and the old computer guy quit and oved away. We get about 2 calls a day about it. Still, impressive you'd go to that trouble. You're ok! Buddy. Got your Oklahoma Season Tickets yet? ;)

I sure wish I had Sooner tickets and the time and money to make the trip each week. I think most of their games will be on TV, so hopefully I will be able to watch most of them from the comfort of my own home. :D Are the Hawkeyes going to be competing for the Big 10 crown this year? I would love to see them get to the Rose Bowl and beat USC. [IMG]

Yes the Hawks should be pretty good... I am already looking forward to beasketball and my second season with Dr. Tom Davis and the Drake Bulldogs. I have season tickets front row, in the baseline.
