Donald Trump apparently didn't look backwards into history when selecting its new campaign slogan, "America First" — a phrase with a long and rich association with American Nazi sympathizers.

    Trump America First.JPG

This slogan is most associated with aviator Charles Lindbergh, who spent a great deal of time in the late 1930s gushing at how wonderful the Third Reich was. Before the Japanese bombed Pearl Harbor, Lindbergh helped form "America First" committees that campaigned to keep the U.S. from fighting the Axis Powers. Lindbergh rose to become a demagogue and accused President Franklin Roosevelt of colluding with a Jewish lobby and Britain to drag America into World War II.

For years this phrase was toxic. Pat Buchanan has used it from time to time, but "America first" and the idea it represented -- American neutrality towards the Nazis -- has been largely banished from respectable discourse.

Now Trump is bringing the phrase back to the mainstream. He deploys it at his campaign rallies. And in his major foreign policy speech Wednesday, there it was right at the top. The real-estate magnate promised to "always put the interests of the American people first." He said: "That will be the foundation of every single decision I will make. 'America first' will be the major and overriding theme of our administration."

    A couple of possibilities here:

    1. No one in the Trump campaign has any background in history or political science and was ignorant that the phrase "America First" has been used extensively in 20th century American isolationism, Nazi appeasement, and anti-Semitism.

    2. The Trump campaign is well aware of the historical usage of "America First" as a slogan in Nazi sympathy public relations campaigns and decided to go with it anyway.

I'm not sure which scenario is the more frightening!

I'm sorry this is just pathetic. Saying America first can be used by anyone without any Nazi ideology. This is nothing more than a cheap shot with no foundation.

    Pathetic is the word.

"always put the interests of the American people first." He said: "That will be the foundation of every single decision I will make. 'America first' will be the major and overriding theme of our administration."

    OUTSTANDING!!!!

Yeah, I saw it. Trump has a totalitarian streak. He's promising to loosen the libel laws to make it easier to sue journalists and he's put several newspapers and media entities on his blacklist, taking away their press credentials and not allowing them into his events and rallies.

He wants to deport people based on their religious beliefs and not allow others to enter the country based on the same criteria. He mocks the disabled.

Hmmm...I wonder who that reminds me of? Could it be.....Hitler?

Sued by anyone, or used by anyone? Proofreading before posting will help avoid confusion.

I am sure that I will be scolded for making the comparison, but I see some similarities between the hype in 1930s Germany and the adoration of the Trumpies in present-day America.

No, I am not saying that Trump is Hitler or that the Trumpies are Nazis.

    Ad-hom noted.

Now about my post--What did I say about Trump that is untrue or childish?

When are you going to learn what an "ad-hom" is?

I'll Google it right after you tell me what is untrue about:

    1. Trump wants to loosen libel laws
    2. Trump wants to deport people based on their religion
    3. Trump wants to ban people of a religion from entering our country.
    4. Trump mocks the disabled.

How convenient you only summarized a section of your post. The tying of Trump to Hitler is unfounded and childish. Its a cheap shot and not helpful. Further, the childishness continues as you work to support a bad argument no matter what the cost.

Aside from mocking the disabled I support everyone of those things you listed. Although I find your minimalistic characterization misleading.

Thoughts about ITL's points that Revmitchell agrees with:

    1. Expect speech against homosexuality and other types of sin to eventually be regulated.

    2. Deport Muslims now, could be Christians later. Not to mention that deportation an be the precursor to persecution.

    3. Again, Islamics now...who next?

I did not say any of that. Yet another poor characterization and minimalistic explanation to meet a presupposition based on personal preference.

My thoughts about the points that you expressly stated that you agree with.

    1. Nazi sympathizers used the slogan "America First" in the 1940's. This is during the Hitler era.
Trump is using the same slogan.

    2. Hitler rounded up people of a certain religion and expelled them from their country's society, eventually killing most of them.
Trump wants to round up people of a certain religion and expel them from society.

    3. Hitler imposed severe restrictions on freedom of the press.
Trump wants to loosen libel laws so that it is easier to sue journalists.

Yeah, I know all about Godwin's law, but it's not unfounded to say that Trump has authoritarian tendencies, just like Hitler did.
