I said this about McCain so its only fair that I say it about Obama. How can the president stop pork barrel spending. He will have the most unproductive administration in history because he'd have to veto every bill. They all contain some pork fat.

Perhaps he means "just pork" as if to say they better send good legislation along with the pork.

I agree, I think Ted Stevens from AK gave us a visual how accustomed one can become to padding legislation. However, what happens when we loose all the experience on the hill like your John McCain's, Ted Kennedy etc...? I know we'll loose them all someday, but like any job, it probably takes them a few terms to get truly good at the job of legislator.

How many terms do you suggest?

    Two terms Max for Senate
    Three terms for House

Many will say what if no one else has the experience needed.

I say, with about 500,000 citizens per congressional district, I am assured there are many qualified candidates

How silly of me. I actually thought this was going to be about pork.

I was so devastated when British pork was banned from Canada and I can't buy English Pork pies anymore.

    Cheers,

    Jim

That is something I think we need to change, the house should be reduced in this day of modern technology. The concept and reasons for having so many Representatives is outdated. Do you know how much money we could save if we cut the house in half?

The problem is they would have to introduce the legislation....

Actually, I would like to see the # of Reps increased to, say about 500. A Congressman should be accessible to his constituents - and currently that is hard to do with many districts be geographly extremely large. Of course, if gerrymandering were to end...

Does it have to be in person? What about email, accountability via a website, what if they had an office in different areas with time requirements for each location?

Sorry, I though this thread was about the total recall of all Irish pork products because of some kind of contamination ;). (Truly happening)

The president can serve only two full terms ... four years each.

Did anybody say line item veto? 10 to 1 odds the Dems get it done. It will give the Republicans some candy (as it was their issue) and Obama more power over legislation. However I'm not convinced that Palosi is so eager to give up that kind of power. Same with Harry Reed.

All presidents want the power of the line item veto, Congress is always against the idea. They would loose to much power to put pork in bills.

So it would be fair to say that every bill that funded much of what President Bush wanted was so fat with pork that it was impossible for him to get the funding for defense and military. Even if he were concerned about over spending he had no choice but to sign if he felt national security was at stake. The Dems got their agenda through and we have remained safe at home. Government Spending
spirals upward and out of control.

Meanwhile the economy passes by everyone's attention and collapses right under their noses. Both Congress and the President are to blame for this even when the Republicans had control of both houses.

IMHO, it is time for both parties to be consigned to the history books.

According to Obama during one of the debates, collectively the pork fat amounted to $18 Billion. A drop in the bucket compared to the defense budget.

Defense and pork do not compare on any level.

I was thinking the same thing..

    Line item and term limits...

    Those would help.
