Thirteen! Ya'll still spank your kids at 13?

Sheesh, I can't remember the last time I actually spanked my older two (12 and 14). Not saying I won't ever have to and I'm going to remember Helen's child abuse reply ( ), but it sure isn't a regular thing around here.

However, I firmly defend everyone's right to reach out and pop a hind end when it needs it.

This law may have a good point to it. If I read correctly the law only applies to children under 3 years of age. How many of us actually spanked our babies, beyond a pat on the hand (or diaper)? Some of this legislators logic is screwy ("a small child is no match for the speed and strength of an adult". well duh!) but just how effective is a spanking on a child to young to understand what they are being spanked for?

Should this be a law? No. Common sense should take care of the problem, but then again I fail to see where some in this country even have any. We have substituted laws for critical thinking. It's a shame.

Back in the 1960s, my sisters and I were spanked with switches and paddles. Mom used to give us ping pong paddles to play with, but I overhead her telling one of the neighbors that they make great paddles for spanking us! We hid them behind the large sofa. Those spankings, switches, and paddles didn't help much, though. My sisters and I are STILL dysfunctional.

As soon as my kids were old enough to understand what they did was terribly and unacceptably wrong, I used my belt. I have 5 kids. 2 are female.
Thankfully, I had to use my belt only once or twice in each of these kids' lifetimes, because I did not make the spanking a private matter. The other kids saw what was happening.
And then they tasted what they saw, and so they knew once the belt was wrapped in my hand, it will hit them.
But the belt landed where it should. Not indiscriminately.
The thing is that there are people whose sadistic streak comes out when the spanking is done, and so spanking turns into beating.
At any rate, because discipline was maintained in my house, none of my daughters had sex outside of marriage while most of my neighbors' daughters were promisuously out at night with "boyfriends", some turned out to be unwed mothers, and none of my sons played truant while most of our neighbors' sons were in malls and video stores playing those stupid video games. Some of them were in and out of jail and never finished high school.
I feel sorry for those kids.
    They were my neighbors.
But their parents were caught up in this same "no spanking" mentality.

I got spanked with a switch from the hedge and my mom would make me go get my own. What a decision that was.

I also remember one time I back talked my mom at the dinner table and my dad back handed me (slapped me). Didn't ever do that again.

Scarlett! does that cat have it's tongue sticking out?! ;)

When I was 16 and deemed myself queen of my universe, I once said something to my mother that I cannot repeat on the BB.

Ah....I can still feel the sting of her slender fingers against my face!!

And I recall with great clarity the the birdies that flew around my head when I could see again!

I'm like you, Bitsy.....I didn't do that again.

    Why, yes, she does! :saint:

When my mother was 19, my grandmother popped her with a hairbrush for mouthing off. Mom got married to dad the next week. And, no, she didn't get married because of the beating. In fact, it hasn't been too many months since Mamaw slapped Mom on the arm. She has Dementia and Mom is taking care of her.

I was about 15 the last time I got it. That was a slap, by Dad, across the face. It was enough to knock me down.

Dad tells the story of when he was a youngster...I'm not sure how old. He was listening to the radio at the supper table and his dad was talking loudly. He told his dad to be quiet, and the next thing he knew, his dad had backhanded him and he went flying out of his chair and through the window screen behind him, landing outside. Now THAT is a slap!

My mother would hang a belt on the porch outside the church every Sunday to use on my brother. And, yes, he deserved it every time.

My Pastor's mother would keep a switch in the song book holder on the back of the pew for him. He says, he thought that all song book holders came with a switch.

My nephew is 3. Mom has had to pop him once, I believe, for kicking her. According to this law in CA, my mom would be in jail.

I can think of a few lawmakers who could use a good spanking, and maybe even a beating.
