From what I understand of him, he seems like a good choice. A textualist and an originalist with an excellent CV.

    Anyone see any red flags?

    I'm a moderate-liberal, and I don't see a problem with this nominee.

IMO, it is the President's prerogative to nominate whomever he pleases, and the Senate's job is to stand as a bulwark against unqualified or extreme candidates.

Simply disagreeing with a nominee's political orientation isn't sufficient grounds, IMO, to consider a person unqualified or extreme.

Now, if we had an alt-right type of nominee, that would be one thing.

We don't. This nominee has all of the necessary qualifications, and the Senate should not stand in the way.

If the Democrats want to use the nomination process to air grievances, they may, but they should not attempt to filibuster this nominee unless something significantly damaging emerges in the review process.

I highly doubt that will happen. They don't have to vote for him, but they should at least allow an up-or-down vote, which will, in this case, lead to his confirmation.

    Not yet.

Seems to be a good pick.

Unfortunately he is tainted by his association with Mr. Trump AND the fact that Trump should not have had this Supreme Court pick. The Republican Party unethically refused to consider Obama's selection.

Now I wasn't too happy that Obama was entitled to make a pick, but I do think that elections matter and those who voted for Obama (not me) were absolutely cheated. And yes, I heard all of the excuses about how no President had nominated a Justice, blah, blah, blah, that were continually updated and qualified every day as Republican leaders discovered that their previous statements did not jibe with history.

They would have had more integrity from the very beginning stating that they were simply going to obstruct the normal flow of government because they barely had enough power to do so.

So if Democrats become obstructionist on what may well be a good pick, I expect that those who defended the Republican obstructionism will also defend the Democratic obstructionism so they don't look like hypocrites.

From what I have seen, I hope he is quickly and easily confirmed.

I think the Dems will make some noise, but they will let him through.

This nomination doesn't shift the ideological balance of the court (which was essentially why Republicans were blocking Garland--he would have). If and when a liberal justice has to be replaced (or possibly even Kennedy, a moderate-conservative), it will be another matter entirely.

I think Schumer realizes this, so he'll have his members play to the base for a little bit then reserve the real fight for the next round.

I don't approve of everything the Democrats do. I hope they can tone it down a bit here.

Your hopes are worthy, but you will be disappointed.

They may need the threat of a Senate rule-change away from the 60-vote approval requirement.

I hate to admit it, but it does appear that Mitch McConnell is the smartest politician in Washington this morning.

As the majority leader, it was a no brainer.

But it is to his credit that he stuck to it. I only wish he had not craved so often to Obama.

On balance, I still consider him a weak kneed appeaser of the left .

It was simply wrong. Now it served a political purpose, but it has completely robbed Republicans of any moral authority.

It looks like a fantastic pick. Bonus: He's only 49 years old. He should serve for 30 years or more.

People that voted for Trump, and conservatives that didn't (me), have got to be ecstatic about this pick.

The only red flag is that there isn't any red flags. By that I mean he hasn't opined much on abortion, but he wrote a book on euthanasia, so I assume he's pro-life.

Whoa. Moral authority and politics are rarely compatible.

ITL said it better. but it's still baloney.

Let's see if this fosters any apologies from Trump opponents.

Why would it? This is one of the areas that I agreed with Trump. Yes, we need pro-life jurors on the Supreme Court.

If you want an apology, OK, I apologize for wondering if he would nominate a pro-life SCOTUS.
