That figures. You tend to support collapsing the American economy. Typical for a socialist.

How did you arrive at the figure of one dollar?

There's a difference between an estimate, and actual GPS tracking by Big Brother.

Mileage reported by dealers is for truth-in-advertising, not taxation.

Yes, I'm quite disturbed by the possibility.

Probably involved some manner of local herbs or fungi, brought to the boiling point...

That is a bit different from the gov installing electronic equipment tracking my every mile. I can't believe anyone would NOT find that disturbing.

Again, can you not see the difference in reporting total mileage when selling a car and equipping installed by the government tracking and taxing my mileage?

Hey Bill, the gov takes donations so just count up your mileage and send them a check. I'm sure they will carefully manage it and only spend it on absolutely necessary government projects.

I can see the difference but it's a difference without a distinction. If your objection is to the device installed on the car consider a different scenario.

Suppose the government does not require any electronic device and the mileage tax was calculated as 12,000 miles per year or 1,000 miles per month for everyone. How do you feel about the mileage tax under this revenue collection scheme?

The system could be made to work without a GPS tracking device. A simple electronic device hooked up to the odometer that sends a extremely low power radio signal (i.e. bluetooth) to a receiver at the gas station that records your mileage and cross references it with your license plate number.

Any vehicle with GM's On-Star system or Ford's Sync system (and other manufacturers systems) is already broadcasting your GPS location.

Sure, but the government has a record of it.

    1. I think the government is already taking too much of our money and shouldn't be taxing any one for miles driven.

    2. Of those two options I'd pick the later.

The Concept of a Mileage Tax is Preposterous

Actually, the mileage tax is being floated by a couple of Senators of Congress persons. Although I'm sure the administration has its fingers in the pot somewhere along the way.

With that said, I'll just sell my cars and move to a senior center that is self contained, including transportation to medical appointments.

The government, at all levels, is getting enough of my money through one tax or another, and I will not continue to feed their addiction for more money!

How about less taxes and less spending for a change?

If the solution to "fairness" is always ever greater increases in the tax burden of the populous, can we honestly say that central economic planning really works efficiently?

It is my understanding that the per gallon gas tax would be dropped and the mileage tax would replace it.

Definitely if you drive more than 12,000 miles a year.

Another option for getting the mileage is that when you renew your license plates you would sign a mileage statement for miles driven in the past year or if you get your plates renewed in person, someone from the vehicle services division would write down your mileage.

Option Two goes too far when it comes to civil liberties IMO.

How can any statement from the present tax and spend administration (14.3 trillion National Debt) that claims less revenue from the sheep be believed?

Sure, even if this were true, it might have an immediate effect of looking like less outlay at the pump, but rest assured it will be another fleecing of and curtailment of the freedoms of we the sheeple.

The Obama Administration is not proposing the mileage tax. But I agree with you that it is hard to believe anything they say.

I'm curious, what freedoms have we lost in the past 10 years? I can only think of one and it has to do with smoking inside buildings. Can you give me a couple other examples?

    Can't text while driving.

While I agree with you in principle, we've already lost the battle. Do you have vehicle inspections in Alabama? Many states require your vehicle to be inspected for emissions and of course they record the vehicle's mileage at the same time.

If the idea to tax by the mile is to discourage gas-guzzling SUV's, don't these people realize that SUV's already buy more gallons of gas than a Honda Civic, and thus, pay more taxes on those gallons of gas purchased?

This is just another excuse to tax anything that moves.

Perhaps true, but you don't know that and neither do I. Just because they say they aren't is no gaurantee they aren't. The bill is just too formal and involved to not have been produced by the current dominant "progressive" wing.

Where to start? How about the Patriot Act?
(Granted this from the NYCLU poin of view) but here are a few without assigning them a moral value:

    4th AMENDMENT FREEDOM FROM UNREASONABLE
    SEARCHES &SEIZURES
    • Law Enforcement authorities may now conduct secret searches and wiretaps in your home or office without showing “probable cause.” They need only to claim that intelligence gathering is “a significant purpose” of their intrusion, even when the primary goal is ordinary law enforcement. They may also monitor where and to whom you send and receive e-mail, or where you go on the Internet, recording every e-mail address and website you have been in contact with.
    • Law Enforcement may now demand any personal records held by any source including your doctor, employer, accountant, or library. All they have to do is claim that it is related to an investigation into “terrorism.” The record keepers may not reveal that your records were provided to the government.
    • Judicial oversight of secret searches has been effectively minimized. The Patriot Act directs judges to consent to secret searches based only on the Government’s assertion that a “significant” purpose of an investigation is gathering information related to “terrorism,” as the government defines it.

5th AMENDMENT RIGHT TO DUE PROCESS & FREEDOM FROM BEING
    HELD WITHOUT CHARGE
    • Americans can now be jailed without a formal charge & without the right to confront the witnesses or evidence against them. American citizens are now being held in military jails without charge and without
a clear path of appeal for their indefinite confinement.
    • Hundreds of Arab, Muslim and South Asian men were rounded up in the Ashcroft raids following September 11, and held for weeks without charges until all were cleared of terrorism charges.

6th AMENDMENT RIGHT TO LEGAL REPRESENTATION
    • Hundreds of U.S. residents have been detained for months at a time, and denied access to the advice and advocacy of an attorney. The Government may now monitor conversations between attorneys & clients in federal jails.
    • The Bush Administration filed papers in court that arguing that an American citizen held in a military jail without charge should be denied access to legal counsel because such access would interfere with the process of his interrogation.

6th AMENDMENT RIGHT TO A SPEEDY AND PUBLIC TRIAL
    • The U.S. Government may now jail its residents and citizens indefinitely without charge & without a public trial.

8th AMENDMENT FREEDOM FROM CRUEL AND UNUSUAL PUNISHMENTS
    • The U.S. Government has taken into custody individuals they identify as “material witnesses,” transported them across the country, and held them for months in solitary confinement without charge or contact with their family.
    • According to the Justice Department’s own Inspector General, immigrant men rounded up in the Ashcroft raids following September 11 and held in the Metropolitan Detention Center in Brooklyn, NY were subjected to a pattern of “physical and verbal abuse.”

14th AMENDMENT RIGHT TO EQUAL PROTECTION
    • Over 82,000 men from Arab, Muslim and South Asian countries registered with the Government under the Special Registration program. Over 13,000 are now in deportation proceedings. None have been charged with terrorism.

    http://www.nyclu.org/pdfs/eroding_liberty.pdf

While some of these are necessary for our protection, don't forget the liberal progressive philosophy "never let a crisis go to waste".

Been to an airport lately and been violated? - granted air travel is not categorized as a traditional "freedom" but try to take a one week vacation in Hawaii without flying.

Life Liberty and the Pursuit of Happiness?

How about the passing of the Health Bill without a Redress of Grievance?
"we need to pass the Bill so we can see what it says". And they did just that. What's next?

The government does a flyover every year or so and invades your privacy by taking pictures of your property. I occassionally look at mine and can see my house, my garden, my cars, my son's boats, farming implements, etc...

Thousands each year loose all their earthly rights due to abortion.

    etc...

No, the reason is to recapture lost gas tax revenues due to fuel efficient cars, hybrids, and the coming electric cars. These cars use little or no gas and thus would not pay much in gasoline taxes.

Yep, another excuse to tax anything that moves...literally.

I wonder what the greenies think of this, since it works against the goodness of driving their plastic cups.
