Congressman Blasts H1N1 Vaccine Distribution to Gitmo Detainees During Shortage

Missouri Republican Rep. Roy Blunt said Americans civilians -- not terrorism suspects -- should get priority to receive the vaccine.

A Missouri congressman expressed outrage Monday over the distribution of H1N1 vaccines to detainees at Guantanamo Bay, Cuba, saying the most vulnerable Americans -- women and children -- are "no longer first."

"President Obama called this pandemic a 'national emergency,' but the federal government continues to fail at one of its most basic responsibilities. And now the administration tells us 'no longer women and children first;' instead accused terrorists will be first in line for H1N1 vaccines," said Rep. Roy Blunt, R-Mo., said in a press release Monday.

Blunt noted that Missouri's Department of Health and Senior Services has only 28 percent of the H1N1 vaccine that it needs.

"It's outrageous that in Missouri, expectant mothers, children and others vulnerable to the H1N1 virus do not have access to the vaccine, and our tax dollars are funding vaccines for accused terrorists detained at Gitmo," Blunt said.

Army Maj. James Crabtree, a spokesman for the U.S. jail facility in southeast Cuba, said Sunday that terrorism suspects held at the Guantanamo Bay naval base will soon get H1N1 vaccines -- sparking outrage among those who argue Americans civilians should have priority.

That's ridiculous. Absolutely ridiculous. If we WANTED to get H1N1 vaccine for my family, we couldn't because it's not available. But those men deserve it more than those who are actually affected by it? I don't think so. But of course this is our government in action. The same one people want to provide our health care. :tear:

Does this show where Obama's thoughts dwell?

Of course prior to last November ('08) there was no inkling of this "health care debacle" specifically, BUT, any discerning person , that was truly looking at more than the liberal media ( but I repeat myself), could have known that nothing positive for the US of A was going to come from this man should he win the election.

Apparently there were far too many that did not fit "discerning"; and many still don't!

Ya just can't win with tinfoil hat conspiracists. Back when H1N1a was first discussed, folks were saying the vaccination is a conspiracy and that taking the vaccine will make you sick. Then, when there's not enough vaccine to meet the immediate demand, those same folks are claiming that withholding the vaccine is a government conspiracy to get people sick. So which is it?

And these folks think they're being good Christian witnesses? More like Christian witlesses.

While I agree with the OP in that American citizens should get the vaccines before the detainees, I think it's important to note that most of the detainees have yet to be adjudicated guilty of an offence. Hopefully, they will soon be given fair trials.

JohnV, I agree with you about the tinfoil hat people. I'm a long time lurker here at BB, and I think you are one of the most reasonable people on here.

Aren't the detainees at relatively low risk of catching the flu?

I would imagine that they have little contact with other people compared to the average working person or school child.

The appropriateness of the OP topic aside statisically, I recall reading an article in JAMA last flu season that reported people in confinement are several times more likely to transmit communicable diseases, especially airborn diseases.

In regards to Gitmo, whether they are the first or last to get the vaccine, it's not going to change the overall supply. We're talking about 200 or so doses.

Wouldn't confinement in the context of the article most likely have been in reference to conventional jails and prisions where inmates are in constant close contact?

In the case of Gitmo are not the detainees relatively isolated from each other and in more of an outdoor environment?

You'd think that, but not necessarily. Although there are only about 200 prisoners, Guantanamo has a military personnel of several thousand, rotating regularly. One could conclude that it's more effective to innuculate 200 detainees all at once and be done with it than it is to innoculate several thousand soldiers and continue doing to no a regular cycle.

Again, I'm not taking a position eithe way in regards to the OP, I'm just citing the scenario.

The issue is not about the overall supply of the vaccine but the timeliness of its arrival to those who are in need the most. And it is about placing terrorists over every day Americans. shameful

I guess if I had more confidence in the vaccine then I'd be more critical about who gets it first. But I am so skeptical about this crisis which I do believe is contrived and the fact that all we know is what is being reported and the shallowness or lack of investigational reporting that I'm not sure how much is truth and how much is deliberately designed to either alarm us or inflame us.

For instance...... so some alleged terrorist are getting 'the vaccine'. Who said this? In what official capacity? Are there more sources which can duplicate this same information from their own knowledge without colaboration or is all reporting from the same source? What is the the reliability and trustworthiness of this source? Have we ever received false reports before? Even if detainees are given a shot and told it is the flu vaccine...... what is the proof? We were told there was no torture then we were told there was torture. Is it possible that experimental cottails are being used under the guise of being 'the flu vaccine' on these detainees? If such is possible, just who would know and who would be told only the cover? Chances are none of the military staff present and delivering the dose or receiving it themselves would know or suspect any hidden agenda. Is there any basis for my skepticism or am I presenting a paranoid delusion? What about the Tuskegee experiments which identified and followed the infection of syphilus with the false pretense of 'treating' when nothing was being done? What about MK-ULTRA? What about the drug experiments with hallucinigens in voluntary student participants under government grants during the 60's? What about agent orange and the exposure of our soldiers and the burrying of health effects until many years later? What about products, such as Round-Up which the government allowed to be labeled as biodegradable without sufficient proof? What about the polio vaccine which was grown in monkey kidneys and some of it contaminated with cancer cells...... which weren't discovered until late, and no recall of that vaccine batch nor effort made to notify those who took it. What about our soldier who have been exposed in possibly unidentified experimentation to depleted uranium ammunitions? series of shots...... some of which were new and untried and unproven and given without even registering lot numbers, or allowed to refuse vaccination based upon religious or personal conscience nor informed that they were receiving experimental vaccines in their series? What about the protective equipment which was issued to them in the first Gulf War and was supposed to protect them in a possible exposure to nerve gas........ but weren't told that the defense department already knew the suits were defective and also had a very limited useful life once deployed? What about the HIV contaminated blood products which were marketed in Europe due to the expense of production rather than properly disposed of when the company discovered that our government had discovered and prevented their use here? What about the acne drug acutane which was released to combat acne in young people....... who weren't warned that serious complications which might lead to bowel disease or colostomies might occur?

And, since when and why would a President decide suddenly in the middle of a Friday night, without the fan fare of delivering a press conference or utilizing a prime time opportunity, decide such a momentus decision as to call 'a national emergency'?

The term 'pandemic' doesn't mean the same thing as 'epidemic'. There is a BIG difference! A pandemic means there is global involvement of most if not all countries of a disease. Many other diseases...... AIDS for one, also qualify. But an epiddemic means a significant percentaged within a community, region, or country are either infected or convalescing from infection.

There are also strange reports regarding the actions of some governmental health agencies in response to this flu threat. In one region, theaters, ball games, and schools were closed because of the flu and people were urged to stay home or avoid crowds and hygiene practices to prevent contracting the flu..... but were encouraged to visit a central supply to obtain face masks because of delays expected in obtaining the vaccine......... Now how dopey is that? The community is encouraged to limited normal activities to avoid contact with other people and increased possibility of exposure but are encourage to go to a central location where sick and well will crowd and stand in line together to wait for a government burearacy to pass out face masks? Utter and unconscionable stupidity and lack of common nor scientific sense!

So if the H1N1a is a real threat, and with the lack of vaccine even after all this time, why do you think that people don't trust the government with their healthcare?
