Delegate for Obama quits over remark

    April 8, 2008
BY ABDON M. PALLASCH Political Reporter/[email protected]

Moving to nip in the bud some potential bad press, White House hopeful Barack Obama's campaign persuaded a delegate to step down after she was ticketed for calling her neighbor's African-American children "monkeys."

Linda Ramirez-Sliwinski, a Carpentersville village trustee, was elected as an Obama delegate to the Democratic National Convention. She sports an Obama sign in her front yard.

On Saturday, two neighbor children were playing in the tree next-door to her house.

Ramirez-Sliwinski "came outside and told the children to quit playing in the tree like monkeys. The tree was not on Ramirez-Sliwinski's property," Carpentersville Police Commander Michael Kilbourne said.

"came outside and told the children to quit playing in the tree like monkeys."

So what is the saying we must use now, quit playing in the tree like horses?

There is yet another reason i can't be an Obama delegate (other than the fact i wouldn't vote for this guy to be dog catcher)...i tell my own kids on a regular basis when playing in the trees that they are acting like monkeys.

It was probably an innocuous comment, but a poor choice of words to say to black children. Kind of like telling some white kids playing in a sand box to "You kids are in a box like a bunch of crackers".

"A village trustee has been cited for disorderly conduct and fined $75. . . .

. . . .police cited Ramirez Sliwinski after the children and a parent said they were scared and upset by her comments. Disorderly conduct is a village ordinance citation that could apply when someone acts in a way that is alarming or disturbing. . . .

. . .Gertrude McClain leads the African-American Coalition of Kane County. . . .she was surprised that police cited the trustee."

Didn't Howard Cosell get in trouble over a similar type comment?

Yup. Ole' Howie was railroaded as a racist after he said it. The truth is, he called everybody a monkey, as is recorded. he was also one of the only white sportscasters to take Muhammed Ali's side in his draft. What happened to Cosell is disgusting, as are all of the perpetually offended folks who look for reasons to ruin people's lives.

got to love the PC mindset...makes you want to: :BangHead:
i guess it's time to stop my kids from singing, "Look at me i'm a monkey in a tree" when they are climbing around in one; hate to have them accused of using "hate speech".

This is one of those things that baffles me. Of all the things that are GENUINELY racist, why do people latch onto these things to get upset over? Here in my neck of the woods, we call ALL kids yardapes, and I've got a grandson and a nephew that we call "monkey" constantly (coz they act like one! climbing on EVERYTHING! ). And my youngest grandson with developmental problems--that is one of the first words that he learned to "sign" (he can't talk yet at the age of 5) and fully comprehend it and its applications in real life, television, books, etc. It was a "breakthrough communication" for him....and he STILL associates it with his grandfather (my husband) who has been dead for a year and a half now. So, naturally, this bugs me!

HOWEVER, with that said, (admitting that I haven't read the full article yet), a couple things come to mind (randomly):
    1) ARGH
    2) WHY was a neighbor yelling at next door kids' behavior when they weren't in her yard? Was this "normal" behavior?
    3) If it WAS normal behavior, why were the kids offended/scared? Because she HAS been obnoxious???
    4) Or was this just a photo-op???
    5) Or was there real offense intended? Who knows???

But that word "monkey"--I sure wish it didn't have negative/racist connotations anywhere. It's a GOOD word to me. :tear: .

This is not original with me. It's called "the tyranny of the offended."

I believe it's because many people are looking for an opportunity to be offended.

The liberal PC police jump at the chance to point out the possibility of an insult.
