Obama leaving campaign trail to visit grandmother

By JENNIFER LOVEN, Associated Press Writer Jennifer Loven, Associated Press Writer

WEST PALM BEACH, Fla. – Democratic presidential candidate Barack Obama is canceling nearly all his campaign events Thursday and Friday to fly to Hawaii to visit his suddenly gravely ill 85-year-old grandmother, his communications director said.

Robert Gibbs told reporters aboard Obama's plane that Obama's grandmother, Madelyn Payne Dunham, who helped raise him, was released from the hospital late last week. But he said her health had deteriorated "to the point where her situation is very serious."

If it is that serious why isn't he going back tomorrow?

I am not privy to any conversations that may have taken place between Barack and his grandmother. I imagine she would not want him to leave the campaign trail at this critical juncture with just a few more days of campaigning left.

I commend Barack for putting family ahead of politics even at the risk of losing this election. I am sure that John McCain would do the same in this situation.

It is my understanding he will leave tomorrow and come back on the trail this Thursday.

We should be willing to pray for his situation.

    I'm curious...

Have we ever had a sitting president with a living grandmother?

Hope everything is well with Obama's grandmother. He's blessed to have had this many years with her.

I don't think McCain would have a living grandmother.

Those that vote by emotion will be firmly voting for him now. However I do pray for that situation. I wonder why his mother is not more involved in this man's life?

If you are asking about Ann Dunham, Obama's mother, she died of cancer in 1995.

That would explain it then. Thanks for the clarification.

This still doesn't explain why his mother gave up her duties as his mother to her mother.

Are you trying to side track this thread.

I think it is good he is visiting his grandmother. It will be a great loss for him when she is gone.

In this article by the NY Times, it says that Obama requested to stay in Hawaii with his grandparents rather than return to Indonesia with her.

He'll soon forget her as he settles into 1600 Pennsylvania Ave. Besides I assume that you have never side tracked a thread before?

So it was the child's decision then. How mature of him. How unmotherly like.

Gee, what cynicism. What makes you think he will forget her?

Well as a child he soon forgot his mother when "he chose" (personally I think she threw him away) to move in with his grandmother. As a full grown man it stands to reason that he will do the same. I say forget as in moving on. Not a personal blocking out of memory. :type:

Where would you rather live, as a child or teenager, Indonesia or Hawaii?
