I wonder what that means....cut off our SS if we don't comply??? Is somthing sinister afoot? Sorry, he may be elected, but I don't trust him. At all.

And the rest of it reminds me of Nazi Germany youth/youth programs of the USSR. I wonder if this will be voluntary or involuntary. And if it will include ALL nationalities and both public and private schools.....

Lady Eagle you beat me to it in your last remark. I would just say that during the primary we had young children and teen age groups singing the praises of the "Dear Leader". Fox News carried the video of a grade school teacher berating a student who said she supported McCain because her father was in Iraq. My grand daughter told me one of her teachers [art history] spent the first 15 minutes of class time after the election berating Bush and McCain while all in the class [excluding her] giggled. All I can say is God have mercy on us!:praying: :praying:

Sounds like some decent plans to allow Americans to serve together.

Nazi Germany had some great plans for serving together, too. It probably won't affect Americans overseas....

So a national volunteer service programme is automatically a harbinger of Nazism? That quite a stretch.

    Nope.

But it is worthy of suspicion, and watchfulness.

Well, Roger, it seems like all of my thoughts and opinions are quite a stretch to you, but not to some others here, so maybe we're in the minority on the BB and in the world in general. I was under the impression that we still had First Amendment rights but apparently I am not allowed to post much of anything anymore without some disparaging comment from you. I should be used to it by now, I guess. Perhaps you don't believe in slippery slopes. Well, I do and so do other conservatives on this Board and elsewhere.

Disagreeing is not a deprivation of first amendment rights. Part of what had made America great has been discussion, disagreement, and dialog. I would assume that even though I live abroad, I still have those rights as well? I gave an honest opinion, you are the one who brought up the Nazis.

Conservatism is not determined by seeing every turn in the road as a slippery slope.

I see our slippery slope as going way back to at least 1989.

I truly think a volunteer service programme of some sort could be good for America.

I never said it was, nor did I imply so. But I am very suspicious of the person who has proven from his voting record to be the most liberal of Senators and who has proven from his voting record to have no regard for human life, and who has proven associations with those who do not have the best interests of America at heart. Until he proves otherwise, I will also be very suspicious of his agenda.

I do, too, but the key word is "volunteer." The word "volunteer" or "voluntary" is glaringly missing from the above quote from his web site. That should give ALL Americans pause, including you......

I like the comment that teenagers can do community service to help with their college bills - better than a free hand out.

I am not suspicious because he has not had a chance to act yet. I still believe that the American system is based on the concept of innocent until proven guilt, not guilt by suspicion.

This only applies since Obama won the election. If McCain had won, it would be the patriotic thing to do.

If McCain even mentioned this, he would get blasted by the conservatives. I disagree with your sentiment.

    Please let me say that

    1) Forced volunteerism needs another name.
    2) We as a nation have become very selfish and lacking in volunteering.

So there does seem to be an impasse that needs a solution.

ALSO asking questions, trying to see the good in things that someone else has dismissed, disagreeing with the party line (or the OP) doesn't put someone automatically at odds with you. Looking at all sides is good for argument. Just an observation.

    A few thoughts here:

At $40 per hour for "community service" it might as well be a handout. I doubt that most of the "community service" work done will be of any real value.

And won't $40 per an hour for registering new democrat voters make the ACORN workers who got $8 an hour really mad?

"...college students who conduct 100 hours of community service receive a universal and fully refundable tax credit ensuring that the first $4,000 of their college education is completely free."

Working for 100 hours to get something for free - oxymoron.

    It's already got a name - salvery.

I don't see that. And volunteer for what? If families were doing what God commands them, the need for volunteers would nearly vanish.

Slavery? mmmm could be community service instead.

Part of the reason that schools have started requiring community service is because students don't have a sense of volunteering. They don't see it modeled.

And in at least some of our churches, we've had to go to new models to fill our volunteer needs - like teachers who will only work every other week or two out of four weeks or once a month instead of weekly.

How do you read "volunteer" in a program that compels junior high and highschool students to perform "public service"?

If Obama was concerned about public service, he would be promoting the Boy Scouts of America. No, he needs a "new" corps. There's more than this in Obama's campaign that parallels rise of the Nazi party.

You are right on target. I see nothing wrong with any of the programs. Maybe it will finally end the "ME" emphasis of our culture and start emphasising the good for all of us.

    High schools students in Maryland have to perform a certain number of hours, forget how many, of public service to graduate. It is a way of beginning to teach the taking of responsibility. {Brown shirts are not required}

We need more people helping serve our communities and our nation and fewer couch spuds. Those who thnk this strikes of Naziam are either very ignorant of history or just want to cause trouble through their hatred of Obama.

People who are involved with others are happier than those who are sitting around and thinking only of self.
