    This is the context:

Obama said he would boost the size of the active military, but that the nation's future depends on more than just additional soldiers.

"It also depends on the teacher in East L.A., or the nurse in Appalachia, the after-school working in New Orleans, the Peace Corps volunteer in Africa, the Foreign Service officer in Indonesia," he said.

Obama reflected on how the presidencies of Franklin D. Roosevelt and John F. Kennedy both made public service hallmarks of their administration and how the nation was the better for such efforts.
He promised to increase AmeriCorps slots from 75,000 to 250,000 and pledged to double the size of the Peace Corps by 2011.

"We cannot continue to rely only on our military in order to achieve the national security objectives we've set," he said. "We've got to have a civilian national security force that's just as powerful, just as strong, just as well funded."

He's saying that America's security doesn't just depend on the military but also the citizens of our country. This looks like "block watch" groups to me.

    That's because there is nothing.

There only about 20,000 American private contractors in Iraq. None of them do any "fighting" except in self defense.

I had this thought last night. The military does not patrol or protect my neighborhood or city. So how does the average citizen playing vigilante work into this.

So how many of those 180,000 are Americans?

According to the article provided by cbt:

"The numbers include at least 21,000 Americans, 43,000 foreign contractors and about 118,000 Iraqis – all employed in Iraq by U.S. tax dollars, according to the most recent government data."

    From your source article:

"The numbers include at least 21,000 Americans, 43,000 foreign contractors and about 118,000 Iraqis – all employed in Iraq by U.S. tax dollars, according to the most recent government data."

Your original statement that "After all we have more "contractors" in Iraq fighting than we do soldiers" is simply not true.

Right now, it can be said that you misstated or were mistaken. You have provided a source that proves it, just as it proves the truth of my statement.

If you now continue to try to make that statement stick, you move from being mistaken to being a liar.

    Which is it to be?

No it's not. I find it ironic that cbt posts a story that proves I'm right, but then says I'm wrong. It suggests to me that he's not even reading his own sources.

Why would you doubt me?

If one is going to call someone else on a false statement, one has to have their own facts straight first, don't you think?

    Guess it is a paradox.

All depends if you are looking at the "heads" or the "tails" side.

When you perpetuate a lie, I call it lying, no matter what side of the coin you're on.

This is your opportunity to disavow your falsehoods as mistakes.

    Otherwise, they're just more lies.

Let's put it this way. If the contractors were not there then the military would have to be doing all the jobs. I suppose historically they could be called mercenaries, some are fighting, some are working logistics, and a whole host of other jobs. The point is that there is much more to fighting than just shooting a rifle.

So you're going to try to justify your mistake and make more on top of it.

That makes your prior assertion that "After all we have more "contractors" in Iraq fighting than we do soldiers" an outright lie and no longer just a mistake.

    You had your chance.

So anyway, how much is this federal neighborhood watch going to costs us. If Obama thinks he can spend like Bush and get away it he's got another think coming.

And will we ever get to fly the unmanned "friendly" drones around once in awhile?

I heard this rumor about Homeland Security wanting a fleet of blimps to watch over us, er I mean watch out for us.

'Eyes in the sky' for homeland security

"Airships are a “very benign presence,” Spyrou said, noting how quiet they are. “People see it but it doesn’t really intrude, it’s just the Goodyear blimp or the Fuji blimp, it’s ‘hiding in plain sight’ as New York Police Department officials like to say,” he said."

Imagine one these with all the high tech "law enforcement" gadgets.
