Chicago was eliminated in the first ballot of voting for the 2016 Olympics on Friday, a stunning defeat for President Obama and first lady Michelle Obama who risked their political capital and the prestige of the presidency on an enormous Olympic campaign.

All Americans who love their country are disappointed that the United States did not win the bid to host these games.

If loving my country and hoping for her success is being liberal, then so be it.

Sorry, Pastor Mitchell, but just because I am a libertarian and oppose most of what goes on in Washington by both major parties does not mean that I wish failure on my country.

If anyone wants to wish failure on this country, then they have the right to do so. However, I will not join them in so doing.

As a libertarian, I oppose the Olympics being held here by and large, because govt money is often moved that way. Largesse is thrown at these efforts, and the economic benefit is minimal.

While it would've been nice to have the Summer games in Chi-town, there's a bigger issue here. Obama desperately needed something to bolster his lagging approvals. Some kind of win...ANY kind. And this was supposed to be the chip shot win for him to give him a shot in the arm. Now that's blown up in his face. The guy can't buy a break right now

I have to wonder what the expression was on his face when he heard the results of the voting. I would have loved to have seen it.

Don't get me wrong. I love my country too, but there are too many problems associated with hosting an event like that. Put those problems in someone else's back yard for a change.

    bolded mine

As I stated on another thread, this is nothing more than the political application of the principle of KJOism. IE: "If you don't believe my way, you're a heretic."

I fail to see what longing for the games to be in the US have to do with love of country. Please elaborate!

Oprah calls in to gal pal Gayle King's radio show:

    says:
    I'm not good at schmoozing
Obama only here for 45 minutes
We weren't supposed to have it

A caller on a local show said he was glad that C-town lost the bid, because he frequently travels to Chicago on business. He was concerned how the Olympics would basically shut the city down for the two weeks.

To me its no big deal one way or the other. I suppose the big deal was that BHO was making a big push for Chicago. I do wonder how much input he would have if another Ameriican city was in the running

I think you need to check those numbers again, the Olympics brings in $Billions to the hosting area.

Again, you lost me here... he was voted in with 54% of the popular vote. Last I looked, that's about where his approval numbers are in the polls. What lagging numbers are you referring to?

Lets see, he's passed more legislation in his first days in office than any president except FDR, his stimulus has softened the effects of the worst recession since the great depression and he is about to pass health care reform which has been on the agenda of every president since Teddy Roosevelt. What break do you think he needs? The Olympics in 2016?

I think you need to read both sides of the balance sheet. Olympics cost more billions than they bring in, provide mostly minimum wage jobs, and the money they bring in mostly goes to local rich people.

Same with sports arenas and such. They are economic losers . . . like churches. But sports is a bigger religion than Christianity.

And brings the highly desirable jobless recovery  with unemployment currently at 9.8%.

The CBO estimates $1 trillion deficits every year for a decade under Obama's budget.

    Yeah he's doing great.

All of these problems are a result of the failed Bush presidency. The problems started years ago under Bush and now we have to try to fix them. It isn't easy and it isn't cheap.

Well, this was said by even conservative economist to be the worst recession since the great depression. Unemployment exceeded 25% during the great depression. I would say 9.8% or even 15% is a lot softer than 25%.

It also took over 10 years to recover from the great depression. There are signs we are currently in recovery mode.

From where I sit, the stimulus is so far a great success. Is it the total solution, NO. It was never intended to be. Did it lesson the impact, YES!

What's worst buddy, they say this as if making the bush tax cuts permanent or more tax cuts for corporations would have us out of this mess by now. That was the republican solution.

Guys with no idea's criticizing the only ones with ideas... That's an easy job, critic.

How can this be when less than 15% of the stimulus funds have been released?
